Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

Hi Aussie calling, I am still carrying out slow stretching exercises some 30 yrs after being diagnosed. I have had numerous surgeries and each time exercise played an important role in recovery. Have a read on this topic by others. Click on "SEARCH " at the top of Forum page. Type in' Hand Stretching. '-select topics and answer.Regards

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

hi , just to say thanks to JANNRUNNER for her post, how refreshing to read something positive, i have been bodybuilding for ten years and am 36 years old ,the thought of what is happening frightens me as weight lifting is a big part of my life, apparently not all nodules turn into contractures so i have read, are they more likely to be if its in the family ?
also i have aching feet and about 4 rounded lumps in my stomach and in my back and 2 in my left arm. anyone else have any of these ?
roll on the day they find a cure or preventative. regards suzuki.

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

I know how you feel because its pretty scary and i don't weight lift. And no i don't have any other nodules and hope i get no more than what i have. I had 6 on my hands and now i have 7. I don't even like to think about contracture but every time you look at your hand you wonder if this is the day. This is such a joke and the joke is on us. I have seen a couple of doctors and one of them said depending on your gene that was handed down to you will show in your hands. The worse your hands are the stronger the gene. If you can believe doctors anymore. I want a cure and now would be a good time. I am so sorry that you have all these extra nodules and i hope they just go away for you because its bad enough dealing with hands. Take care

There is a good preventative treatment - read the section of the web site regarding radiotherapy. I've had no new nodules since my hands were treated and no contraction.

radio therapy would be good but the only place in england (poole hospital) are not doing any more at the moment as their machine is working at full capacity on cancer patients.
i am on the waiting list but nothing available at the moment.

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

It just makes sense to me to stretch my hand. My hand seems to "tell" me to stretch it. I have had NA and RT and it still just seems the thing to do.
It also seems that a splint at night would be the thing to do, but the tightness is across the thumb-pinky span. I haven't seen a splint anywhere that would do that stretch and I'd need a prescription to have one specially made by a Certified Hand Therapist. I'm not sure I need it that badly because it is significantly better after RT and seems to still be improving gradually.

did you have rt after na to stop further progression ?
if i dont get rt done in time and have to have na first will the rt still work? thanks, suzuki.

Re: Is stretching the hand/fingers of any use?

I have had my for about 2 to 3 months. It started with my right hand and it just seemed to pop up over night. First i had one and then i had 3. Then a couple of weeks later it started all over again in left except i have 4 in that one. No contacture at this time. Just alot of pain and palms itch. But come evening time it seems like my hands tighten up and stays there all night. Following morning right hand seems to curl up and is very tight in ring finger. Take care. By the way are you from England? The reason i ask is my husband is from Essex England.
