RT in Australia

I just had 7 days of RT done in Australia and I am worried my nodules look much bigger now then before the treatment and my hand is more stiff. Saying this, I just finished the treatment on friday and I am aware it takes some time after RT to see any changes but I did not expect to have it worsened before it hopefully gets better...I have DD only on my right hand and I am on stage N, so I thought this RT is for me....Anyone who had similar experience after RT?

Re: RT in Australia

Hi Brigit,

I can relate to your concern. I had the 7 day protocol done in February this year and I can't really notice any visible improvement. Right after the RT the bigger nodules become a bit reddish, I don't remember if there was any further enlargement.
Presently the condition still seems to have it's good and bad days, with more and less pain and the slight pretreatment contraction varies accordingly.
Having said that, there must be improvement, as my attention doesn't get drawn to the hands as much as before when washing my hands, or clapping them for instance. Also clasping my hands in prayer position is much easier these days.
And in general there seems to be a little less of a contraction.

By the way, where and by whom did you have your treatment done?

Cheers, Dirk

Re: RT in Australia

Hi Dirk, thanks for your response. I liked your comment about your hands in prayer position, that's what I might have to do too....To answer your question, I had my consultation done in Tugun with Dr. Christie, but the RT done in Premion Place, Southport with different staff every day. My first 2 treatment I had on Wed and Thursday, and 5 treatments the week after. I was told it doesn't make any difference if there are 3 days none treatment in between, and so I didn't bother. Also I mentioned the treatment plan of 2x5 days but I was told the study shows the same result on either option.
So I guess it's a waiting game for us, but still disappointed to not see a tiny bit of improvement...cheers Brigit

Re: RT in Australia

The goal of RT is to stop the progression (growth of nodules and new nodules), not necessarily for the condition to improve. Any improvement should be seen as a bonus.

Some of my nodules shrunk after RT and some didn't, but I still consider the treatment a huge success. Before the treatment they were growing rapidly, and they continued to grow during the first three or four days of treatment. Then the growth stopped. The shrinking happened very gradually, over many months.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: RT in Australia

My goal was to stop the progression and RT did that. Bonuses were some nodules decreasing in size, prior very weak grip strengthened, and crawly sensations in my palm that drove me nuts went away. These improvements occurred over 3-6 months. After almost 3 years, still no new nodules in the radiated area.

Hang in there. Update us periodically about improvement in your hands.

Re: RT in Australia

I had RT in Oklahoma USA for 7 days and after almost 2 months, I've seen absolutely no improvement and a little worsening of my condition. I am disappointed but still hopeful for it may take more time. Also considering a re-treatment.
All in all, no difference at all as yet.

Re: RT in Australia

I had treatment last year on both hands in Germany. The treatment was 5x3 Gys one week, 3 month off, then 5x3Gys again. After the first round of RT I also thought that my condition got worse. I grew new nodules, did not see any improvement, then, after my 2nd round of RT my condition changed. Now, 7 month after my 2nd round, my 2 large nodules are gone, so far I have not had any progression and I hope it stays that way. The chord is here to stay, but who cares! My hands are not even dry anymore, a bit stiff. I was not able to put my hand flat on the table before, now, no problem.

So, give it some time, something will happen.

Good Luck!

Christl

Re: RT in Australia

Very interesting to hear about your experience on this issue, thanks a lot to all of you.....
I can see in most cases it is a waiting game and in some cases the RT is successful straight away. Would be interesting to see if it has something to do with the treatment plan of 7x3Gys which is 21GYS or the 15x2Gys which is 30Gys. It's early for me to say, but I consider to have a follow up RT done if nothing improves over the next 8 weeks because I had only 7x3Gys so far and that might not do the trick for some people....but hopefully I am lucky and I see some improvements and no worsening!

Re: RT in Australia

Brigit, It will be interesting to see reports by our DD friends on this site of successful or not RT with the different protocols.

I had 2 Gy x 5 days, a weekend in between and another 2 Gy x 5 days for a total of 20 Gy in 10 days. It stopped my progression which is what I wanted and call successful treatment.

Re: RT in Australia

Hi Fellow Aussie,
I had RT in 07. Prof Seegenschmiedt advised that the treatment continues to take effect for some months after . In my case i visited him 4 months after the intial treatment and he decided to wait another 3 months before considering to administer the next round of 15 Gy. Infact in my right hand I did not received the additional 15 GY. Sit back and enjoy life.
Regards.
