Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

I am absolutely heartbroken that Dr. Eaton is closing his practice. I had been counting on him for at least a few more tune-ups. I wish Charlie and Valerie the very, very best and hope that his sons stay Dupuytren free and that the entire family lives happily ever after!

Does anyone know why Dr. Eaton decided to close his practice?

Way back on page 1 of this thread Dr. Eaton posted the following:

"DupFoundation Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice
I am closing my practice, a very tough decision, but the right one. There were many factors involved, and that I see this as an opportunity to really concentrate on Dupuytren Foundation and Dupuytren Society efforts. I will remain connected to the Dupuytren community. There is so much to do!

I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to the Dupuytren Society and members of this forum who changed my life by introducing me to the technique of needle aponeurotomy and encouraged and supported my journey to know Dupuytren's and the people whose lives it affects.

I am grateful in particular to Wolfgang Wach, who remains a friend and true inspiration, and with whom I plan to continue the journey to find better options for those affected by Dupuytren's and related conditions.

Again, there is so much to do!

Thank you so much -

Charlie Eaton"

DupFoundation:

FYI, as you may recall, you have performed the needle procedure on my hands (successfully) on several occasion. I foolishly went to several other surgeons (one in Texas and one in Louisiana) and it was a total waste of time and money ..Not sure where I will go now, but it will hopefully I can find somone with 1/2 your talent and character.

Good luck with whatever you do going forward

Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

I like others in this forum had the pleasure of havig Dr. Eaton perform NA on both of my hands on several ocasion. In addtion to having surgery several times, I also tried going to other surgeons to peform NA, and in each case it was a waste of time and money. That said, I''m now in need of NA on both hands and in the process of searching for someone with 1/2 of Dr. Eatons, talent and character.

Thus can anyone on this forum recommend someone to peform NA.

Thanking you in advance

Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

Roder,
For someone close to you, I would check out Dr. Bourland in Memphis. He was one of the first to train under Dr. Eaton and does a lot of NA procedures. Several on this board have seen him.

Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

From Dr. Eaton's office (not Dr. Eaton personally):

I know Dr. William Bourland in Memphis, TN and Dr. Gary Pess of Eatontown, NJ have been performing the NA for quite a long time. You can also find a listing of other doctors on the International Dupuytren's Society website under "Find Help". We do suggest that you ask any practioner if they are a hand surgeon and if they do the NA procedure, how many have they performed? You can find that list by going to www.dupuytren-online.info.

First let me say that I was one of Dr. Eaton's first NA patients way back when - and considered him my savior from open hand surgery. He is truly one of the most wonderful doctors I have ever encountered. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the work you have done for all of us with this wacky disease. You truly have changed lives.

Maddie - I have had NA (and Xiaflex) with Dr Pess. He is made from the same mold as Dr. Eaton. Caring, knowledgable and capable.

Ellen,

Would please share your experience with Xiaflex? Any comparisons regarding outcomes between NA & Xiaflex? Dr. Eaton did NA in 2009 and I need it again. Local doc said one of my hands would be good Xiaflex candidate and other NA. Thank you kindly!

Please note- Dr. Eaton does not use nor does he recommend Xiaflex. There are not sufficient long-term multiple patient studies to see if Xiaflex works any longer than NA does and lots of anecdotal evidence that in some cases it can accelerate the disease. From personal experience Xiaflex not only did not last longer than 18 months, it accelerated the disease.

Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

Dr. Keith Denkler is an outstanding doctor who practices on the West Coast near San Francisco. He is a hand surgeon and did many surgeries before he found out about NA. He prefers doing less invasive treatments including Xiaflex now, but he still does occasional surgeries when NA or Xiaflex is not feasible. Before I had my first NA almost 4 years ago, someone posted that he had flown from the midwest via Southwest Airlines into Oakland, rented a car, drove about an hour to Dr. Denkler's office in Larkspur, CA, had NA done, drove himself back to Oakland, flew back home the same day, and went to work the next morning.

Others like to take a little vacation and see San Francisco. Flying into San Francisco airport may be a little closer in miles but is about the same in minutes. Larkspur is on the Richmond bridge side of Marin County. The Golden Gate Bridge connects Marin County to San Francisco on the West side.

So if this works for you, I can't recommend him highly enough! Dr. Denkler is wonderful as a person, doctor, and dedication to Dupuytren's patients. I had NA a second time. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. I think there are a lot of wonderful doctors for us and no one is better than Dr. Denkler.

Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

Received the following email a few days ago - count me among the thousands devastated by the news of Dr. Eaton closing his practice - but onward and upward:

Notice from Charles Eaton MD regarding The Hand Center

I'm writing today to inform you that I am closing my surgical practice effective Dec 1 2012. This has been a difficult decision and I remain grateful for the opportunity to care for so many wonderful people during my career.

The practice will continue with Dr. Veronica Diaz, Jupiter Hand to Shoulder, LLC (http://JupiterHandtoShoulder.com) at the same phone number: 561-746-7686. Please contact Dr. Diaz for appointments or to request copies of your medical records.

Dr. Diaz received a degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University, graduated Medical School at The University of Florida, completed an Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Miami and a Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery fellowship at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Diaz is an experienced upper extremity specialist, managing problems from the fingertips through the shoulder. She is moving her current practice location from Martin to Palm Beach County, and will be a great asset to the community.

I am transitioning from practicing surgery to focusing fully on The Dupuytren Foundation (http://Dupuytrens.org), which needs our continued support to find a cure for Dupuytren's disease and related conditions. Follow the progress of the quest for a cure through the Dupuytren Foundation newsletter.

Best wishes and good luck!

Charles Eaton MD
