a Latex pad after surgery

I had surgery a little over 8 weeks ago, I have been going to therapy for 3 weeks now and the scar tissue is diminishing but not gone. My therapist made me a night splint on my first visit but said she would give me a latex pad once it was completely healed and not open anymore. She said the latex pad should be worn under the splint at night and that it breaks up the scar tissue. While I do my exercises and massage the scar tissue everyday there are still areas of scar tissue that I am hoping and praying won't turn into Dupuytren nodules. Has anybody else heard of the latex pad? Last time she did a full hour of ultrasound and it seemed to break up the tissue a lot and since then I have used the latex pad along with my splint.

Re: a Latex pad after surgery

Use of silicone sheets or gel is well established in treating scars. Using silicone sheets with splints for DD both pre and post surgery, usually post, has been done before too. I have not heard of using latex?

I don't know what I was thinking it is silicone not latex. Thank you.

It's all about the attitude.

Re: a Latex pad after surgery

Higgyrox, I have the same concern. I'm 8 weeks past surgery and there is a substantial amount of scar tissue in my pinkie and palm. I was able to close my palm 4 weeks after surgery, but can't do that now due to scar tissue. My understanding is that the silicone helps with the surface scarring not the underlying scar tissue. My hand therapist has just started using ultrasound on my hand to break up the underlying scar tissue. You might ask about that.

Re: a Latex pad after surgery

GailSusan - I am 6 1/2 weeks past surgery and have quite lumpy scars in my palm and pinkie too, but have had them from the beginning. I am wearing a silicone strip under a splint at night and have some silicone gel that I put on, and during the day my hand therapist suggested using a strip of micropore placed tightly around the scar area to the back of my hand.

None of this makes any difference so far, but I will mention the ultrasound and hope it works for you.

I know from past experience that I seem to form lumpy scar tissue. My long scar from an abdominal hysterectomy in 2011 was lumpy for several years! but is now flat. Perhaps my hand scars will be the same! However, with our hands the scar tissue certainly hinders movement.

Re: a Latex pad after surgery

As well as using a silicone strip (like a piece of sticking plaster) I also found silicone gel in a tube at the pharmacy/drugstore. My hand therapist who I saw today is keen on silicone in one form or another. She told me to smear it on rather than rubbing it in.
She has seen people whose scar tissue was worse at 6 or 8 weeks than earlier on. But she reckons scar tissue has "a finite life" and will eventually flatten out. We hope so!
