Thumb nodule after Re-RT

Hi folks. Coming up to 4 month anniversary of Re-RT and unfortunately nothing positive to report. But question- anyone out there have cortisone after RT? Both thumbs have become quite involved since re treatment with cords and one honker of a nodule at the base of the left. I know my GP will suggest a cortisone shot. Wondering if anyone has treated a nodule this way, after RT?

Sorry to hear this. 4 months might be too soon to know for sure it hasn’t helped unless, reading your description, there are new or increases in nodules. People do sometimes report it’s worse before better following RT. Dr Pess in NJ will often inject nodules with a steroid, but there needs to be appropriate consultation to assess suitability, and to determine the specific steroid he uses. Even then the outcome may be unpredictable and only provide short term relief.

I had a new sore nodule appear in a previously irradiated palm after injuring my hand. It took months to get it under control, with general massage using various oils, hot, cold soaks, overnight wrap with silicone sheet, but now it’s dormant. I can’t say any of it helped so YMMV.

Re: Thumb nodule after Re-RT

Thanks for the reply spanishbudda. Appreciate that. I remember reading that you finally saw the train stop at about 18 months! I'm still waiting- curious though-as those 18 months went by, did you experience the typical duputryns along the way? The burning, aching and tight palms? Just curious! I guess I'm basing failure on the ongoing symptoms that haven't let up in 12 months. The nodule at the base of the thumb is large and I doubt I'm up for anymore RT. so was wondering about cortisone. Unfortunately I'm in Canada and while radiation is covered by health care, (thank god- I had more than my share!) the wait time for a specialist is ridiculous. I won't be seen unless I have a contracture and wait times are nearly 2 years. So basically the internet is my doctor. Thank god for sites like this. So I'll sit on it for awhile longer. Praying things settle down. Thanks again!

After RT I had ongoing symptoms such as soreness, aches, cramps, tightening for months, and this was both hands. But no new nodules in that time or increase. I can’t say it all stopped suddenly but I stopped obsessing about the hands as the symptoms declined, and then one day realised the condition was dormant. One hand has reversed with nodules and cords softer, the other hand (the one I injured) less so. Some people do report new nodules a few months after RT, but I don’t know what happens for them after that!
