Dupuytren questions about blood tests and what vitamins

I am having my second set of 5 day radiation in june and want to know a few things:

I am having a physical soon and always have a blood test to test vitamin D and many other things like cholesteral. What should I have tested knowing I have Dupuytren's Disease? should i test for magnesium? there are two magnesium tests, which one is more accurate? if calcium drives dupuytren's is there a calcium test?

what suppliments are good to take if I have dupuytren's? daily vitamin over 50? my vitamin d is always low so i take that. how much?

also lots of people use a magnesium topical on nodules and cords on hands? which kind?

is melatonin 10 mg bad to take for dupuytrens

i heard vitamin c suppliments are not good?

Re: Dupuytren questions about blood tests and what vitamins

Hi dorislisa,

below a few tentative answers to your questions:

Q: I am having a physical soon and always have a blood test to test vitamin D and many other things like cholesteral. What should I have tested knowing I have Dupuytren's Disease? should i test for magnesium? there are two magnesium tests, which one is more accurate? if calcium drives dupuytren's is there a calcium test?
A: Dupuytren's is a genetic disease. Magnesium or calcium levels are not related with Dupuytren's. No need to test those or anything else for Dupuytren's.

Q: what suppliments are good to take if I have dupuytren's? daily vitamin over 50? my vitamin d is always low so i take that. how much?
A: no need to take any supplements for Dupuytren's. Supplements do not help with Dupuytren's and, with maybe very few exceptions, don't aggrevate Dupuytren's either. You might have a look at the "Diet" section on https://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuyt...s_research.html and with regard to Vit E on https://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytren_anecdotal.html .

Q: also lots of people use a magnesium topical on nodules and cords on hands? which kind?
A: Magnesium topical won't help with Dupuytren's.

Q: is melatonin 10 mg bad to take for dupuytrens
A: there is no study on the effect of Melatonin on Dupuytren's. Most liekely there is no effect on Dupuytren's.

Q: i heard vitamin c suppliments are not good?
A: Should you have a deficiency of Vit C a low dose of Vit C Supplement (50 - 100 mg or so) will probably do no harm. Mega doses of Vit C may generally cause health problems https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifes...-c/faq-20058030 .

Hi Doris, have you seen the DRG/DF article on magnesium https://dupuytrens.org/magnesium-and-dupuytren-disease/?

Topical magnesium can dry the skin, so people on FB groups have started using an oil based solution.

Without other systemic symptoms I would not worry about other tests in your blood work, there is a thyroid link amongst the risk factors https://dupuytrens.org/faq/what-other-co...-to-dupuytrens/

The BDS lists Vitamin C amongst its risk factors, http://dupuytrens-society.org.uk/information/risk-factors/, but like most vitamin supplements I would suggest only take them if there is a deficiency in your diet.

Here’s hoping your RT helps.

Best wishes SB

Re: Dupuytren questions about blood tests and what vitamins

Hi Spanishbuddha, thank you for bringing the magnesium comment to attention. It might be that Magnesium actually did help in that specific case but this cannot result in a general advice for magnesium as supplement and or topical for treating Dupuytren's.

As Doctor Eaton points out
"I’m not suggesting that taking extra magnesium will somehow turn off Dupuytren disease. Instead, there may be harmful effects of low magnesium in people with Dupuytren disease. There’s no reason to try to increase magnesium levels above normal: high magnesium levels can cause problems as well. The goal is normal, and there’s no way to make normal more normal."

The general recommendation is if you have a magnesium deficiency you might consider taking a supplement. If not, don't take any.
