Dupuytren guitarists?

Hello all,

I'm very new here, hope this new thread is OK, if not, moderators please move or delete.
I'm 53, male, DD started probably 10 years ago in RH pinky but only diagnosed in 2016, in the Netherlands, specialist told me the ol' line about "we can't do anything until you can't open your hand". OK great.

I'm now "Stage 1", 10% contracture in RH pinky and ring fingers. For a couple of years there was very minimal progression, but in the past 6 months I've developed a few newly-detectable nodules and now pushups or yoga or any kind of hand flattening just hurts. The point of this thread is that I'm a guitar player (right handed, both plectrum and fingerstyle) and will avoid having anyone stick any piece of sharp metal inside my hand for as long as humanly possible :)

I'm still firmly in the "expensive and probably useless homeopathy" stage of treatment, but I'm wondering if there are any other serious guitarists out here who have had one or more of the surgical treatments and can speak to how this has affected your guitar playing: how long before you could play again, what degree of recovery was there, etc.

thanks!
Mark

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'm not a guitar player, except for a few chords and strum patterns, but a bit more advanced on piano, so can't directly respond. However my plans for the future do if necessary include "stick(ing) any piece of sharp metal inside my hand" in the form of NA if there is a palpable chord; and applicable to your case thereafter considering RT to halt or delay further progress. I have had RT, and have some loss of flexion in one hand, but can make an octave on piano and have sufficient flexibility to continue playing at an intermediate level, and continue to improve and for that I thank RT. Prof Werker https://www.dupuytren-online.info/honorary_members.html may give you further advice on your future.

Best wishes SB
