I’m scheduled for surgery next month….
I’m a 72 year old in excellent health and I am seeking any advice regarding surgery for Dupuytren’s. I have had Dupuytren’s for about 15 years, but over the last 5 to 6 years, my middle and ring finger were beginning to bend into my palm of my right hand. I found a hand specialist who has experience with the NA procedure and I received a relatively good outcome. Unfortunately, after about 3 years after the NA procedure, my ring finger is now at approximately 45, my middle finger is less bent. I never experienced any pain or discomfort from Dupuytren’s and I have strength and full use of my hand. The issue is that I have difficulty typing, putting on gloves, putting my hand in a pocket, and just doing every day cleaning functions around the house that requires a flat hand! My surgeon told me I’m not a candidate for NA anymore and that surgery would be recommended. After surgery I will be working with a certified hand therapist. I am having reservations about my upcoming surgery, which I will discuss with my surgeon next week for my wellness visit with him. I’m seeking advice or any experiences good and bad regarding hand surgery for Dupuytren’s.

Hi Clasina.
I have had hand surgery but not for DD. Experiences reported on here and elsewhere vary from quick recovery as in a few weeks, to slow recovery over many months with problems associated with stiffness, swelling, infection, and pain. So, it depends. What does seem important is the skill and experience of the surgeon, access to post surgery care including the physio you mention, but also scar management (nurse), the surgeon's availability for consultation. Find out in advance on their recommendations for managing the wound and use of lotions, oils, etc to help with the wound and physio as you regain flexibility.

Hello,
I have had several Palmar Fasciectomy's for severe DC and it was a breeze. It takes several weeks to heal depending on your health, and after the surgery, I had ZERO pain. Absolutely none. I would not be concerned with it providing you have a good surgeon who is familiar with the Disease and treatment. best of luck to you and may you have a speedy recovery.

Thank you so much for your reassuring message. I decided to postpone my surgery till the end of December or beginning of January. We live in Connecticut, so it is summer right now and I have to be able to water and tend to our vegetable and flower gardens and still have use of my right hand. I will be scheduling my surgery for this Fall or early in January. I can then just relax and let my hand heal. I have researched and seen quite a few hand specialist’s and finally found a surgeon with 5 star reviews from many of his patients. He is an hour and a half drive away, but I have great confidence that he is an excellent and experienced surgeon for Dupuytren’s. I am curious how long ago you had your surgery and have your fingers remain flat? Thanks again!

I've struggled with this horrible disease for 10 years and am also 72. Initially the contracture affected my RH little and ring fingers, with the ring finger being the worst. In fact it was so badly entwined with those nasty collagen cords that even after successful treatment with Xiaflex injections into it and the ring finger, it developed a permanent deformity (Boutonniere Deformity), while the ring finger turned out great and 5 years later is still nice and straight. Then my LH (dominant hand) started showing signs of DD with the ring and little fingers again. I avoided surgery in both instances due to what my father experienced, having undergone two surgeries for his DD, leaving him with scars and stiffness in which keeping his DD may have been a better option, frankly (btw: Xiaflex was not nearly as effective in my LH as both fingers are beginning to contract after only 10 months or so). Personally I'd recommend Xiaflex before trying surgery. You can always have surgery in the event Xiaflex isn't the answer.
