RT and

Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are a group of diverse bone marrow disorders in which the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells. MDS is often referred to as a “bone marrow failure disorder”.

Radiation and chemotherapy for cancer are among the known triggers for the development of MDS.

I was just diagnosed with this about an hour ago. Probably a pure coincidence that I had RT for my hand 10 months ago. I am not showing any symtoms. It showed up on a blood test and then a bone marrow biopsy.

Re: RT and

Very sorry to hear that callie. A bit disturbing, as someone who also has had RT. You say no symptoms, but then that is surely not a standard blood test analysis to detect the anomaly, or is it?

Re: RT and

It was an interesting chain of events. I am (was) very healthy my whole life with only Dupuytren's as a problem. I have no symptoms of anything. Three weeks ago I had a pain in lower right back. Just from having friends explain this pain in past years I thought for sure it was kidney stones. I went to the emergency room for a few hours and sure enough it was kidney stones and they set up an appointment with a urologist for further treatment. They did a CBC test (complete blood count) at the ER. The urologist noticed that my platelet count was 35 (normal is 150-400). From there it was a trip to a hematologist and a bone marrow biopsy. We'll see how this plays out. Dupuytren's is the least of my problems all of the sudden.

Re: RT and

Jolene,

I am age 67. The interesting thing is that I went golfing the day after the bone marrow biopsy and shot an 80 for 18 holes on a difficult course (no mulligans or penalty strokes). I walked the 18 holes on a very hilly course so I used that as a gauge for how I felt, which was fine.

Re: RT and

Wow I am so very sorry. We fight and fight to try to resolve this dup & ledderhose disease just to get hit with something greater. It is so disheartening.

Any idea what the plan of action for this?
Honestly I would assume its to early to gather a plan.

Are you married?

Re: RT and

Yes, married. Plan of action is an immediate appointment at the Oregon Heath and Science University (OHSU). They are very highly regarded. Should get considerably more information from the appointment.

Re: RT and

Callie I'm sorry to hear your news. One thing that stood out for me after reading about MDS on wikipedia (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myelodysplastic_syndrome) was that a copper deficiency could morphologically resemble MDS in bone marrow biopsies. Maybe something to look into.
