Dupuytren's and Atrial Fibrillation?

I just read an article by Dr. John Mandrola (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/840794) in which he talks about the growth of scar tissue (fibroids) as a possible contributor to AFIB.

I wonder if AFIB and Dupuytren's are related? I have both and wonder if there is a correlation.

I just found your question when I searched to see if they were related. I think so. My mother and and 7 of my siblings are genetically predisposed to both. So far my mother, and 7 siblings have Dupytren's, and so far my mother and I have lost 3 siblings to AFib/heart related problems and at least one more has bad AFib.

If there is a link between Atrial Fibrillation and Dupuytrens I doubt there is a causal connection. Alcoholics and diabetics tend to get DD more frequently than those who don't but having DD does not cause one to be an alcoholic nor does it lead to diabetes. In the reverse direction it seems to me that people with DD tend to get frozen shoulder but people with frozen shoulder don't tend to have DD.

A number of family members have DD and I now know quite a number of unrelated people DD. I have yet to come across any heart issues of any kind.

Re: Dupuytren's and Atrial Fibrillation?

I am late to the game on this forum. Within the same year I was diagnosed with both Dupuytrens and Atrial Fibrillation. I had shown no signs or symptoms of either previously. Nodules showed up on my hand in the spring of 2020, and on Jan 8th 2021 I was admitted to the hospital with A-fib. I came here to see if anyone else shared similar concurrent diagnoses. I'm also wondering if something else may show up next (if there are any other signs or symptoms to watch for). Besides these things, I have been very healthy up until now. These symptoms occurred at 51 years of age. I am being tried on a beta-blocker (Bisoprolol) for the A-fib. I started a couple of days ago on the medication and I will be put on a Holter to determine whether the meds are working to reduce "irritability" within my circuitry.

Interesting. It's possible that some of the risk factors associated with DD and a-fib are the same, for example diabetes, smoking, age, lipid profiles, and as you mention fibrosis. In DD there's physical trauma and in a-fib there's systemic trauma. The two conditions however are not usually linked.

What else may show up, DD related: DC, LD, frozen shoulder, Peyronies (m), but not inevitably.

Re: Dupuytren's and Atrial Fibrillation?

When you use the letters DC, are you just referring to Dupuytren's contracture (associated with DD) or does DD encompass contracture as well and therefore DC means something else? Thanks for your input.

I have none of the other mitigating factors that were mentioned (edit: whoops, I guess being over 50 includes me in the age category), but I do enjoy a couple of glasses (sometimes more) of wine some days. Sometimes none. So alcohol consumption is possibly a trigger for my A-fib. I drank a few cups of coffee, and had a few glasses of wine the day/night before my a-fib issue and I know I was incredibly thirsty when I awoke that day (in a-fib). I asked my cardiologist whether dehydration may have triggered the situation but he didn't seem to think so.

I had a rather shocking start to 2021.

Sorry to be so brief, I use DD to refer to the general fibrotic disease in the hands and DC to refer to the end result being a contracture. Hopefully you know most people do not get a contracture. My overall point was that maybe any link, with a-fib, is just coincidence because of the common risk factors.

You mention alcohol, and the forum and facebook groups cry out with people who don't drink yet have DD. DD does have a genetic basis that seems to be set off by other factors, and for some it is speculated that maybe that includes alcohol.

I am not familiar with the epidemiology of a-fib.

Sorry your 2021 has started badly, and you may not be receptive yet to hear that DD is not going to kill you and for most progresses, if at all, very slowly, and then if it does there are various treatment options that put it into the area of ongoing maintenance.

Re: Dupuytren's and Atrial Fibrillation?

Thanks, the DD is just frustrating because I'm a mountain biker, and I like to play piano. The nodules are sore to the touch so it impedes my activities. I am happy to hear that the nodules don't always lead to contracture in all cases. The Afib is what's really throwing me off my game!

I appreciate your responses. Have a great weekend.

I also bike but not seriously, I use ergonomic grips and they help a lot; they may not be suitable for a more competitive or serious off-road type of riding. I also play piano, and despite nodules and cords have no problems with reach or flexibility so far.
