I'm new here and have questions about my DC.

I am 48, male, new to this board, and would like to ask a few questions about my DC.

My left hand started with little bump about 2 years ago and it has slowly grown and the skin now shows a slight “V” with the big end at the base of my ring finger and the point of the “V” at the little bump. I have no trouble opening my finger up completely and only a little pain when the little bump is pressed.

It scares me to read about and see pictures of the surgical procedure. About 15 years ago, I had surgery on my right hand for a tiny bump at the base of my middle finger. It was really small, was not much of a bother, and DC was never mentioned. I really never did get a good answer to what it was but according to the doc, it was necessary. I was young, had good insurance, and there was no internet to research. In discussing it throught the years with other doctors, I now think removing that little bump was a mistake so it puts me in a position of avoiding surgery if possible.

What stage does my DC sound like?

Has there been any case of therapy such as stretching, reducing the progress or reversing DC?

Since my DC looks like it is in it’s early stages, would it be wise to seek some of the non invasive procedures at this time?

Is it possible for my DC to stabilize or does DC allways get worse?

What is the latest with Diet’s influence on DC?

What about, as I have heard, vitamin D having an influence?

Thnaks everyone!

Re: I'm new here and have questions about my DC.

Welcome, Joe! You found the right place ... I am trying to answer your questions but it's only my opinion:

What stage does my DC sound like?
A: very early. In the classical Tubiana grading: stage N.

Has there been any case of therapy such as stretching, reducing the progress or reversing DC?
A: not really. Stretching might even be counterproductive because the stress might foster growth of cords. A few people reported that frequent and powerful massaging with a ball (wood or plastic) reduced the nodule. NAC might help as a drug in eraly stage (see the Other therapies page of this web site. Radiotherapy might slow down or even stop further growth. That's about all I know.

Since my DC looks like it is in it’s early stages, would it be wise to seek some of the non invasive procedures at this time?
A: Unfortunately every patient reacts a little different. But yes, why not give it a try?

Is it possible for my DC to stabilize or does DC allways get worse?
A: it might take 5 - 10 years before your finger contracts and then you still can have NA. No need to panic.

What is the latest with Diet’s influence on DC?
A: not much.

What about, as I have heard, vitamin D having an influence?
A: no real evidence. Excessive vitamins are dangerous, not healthy (my personal opinion).

Re: I'm new here and have questions about my DC.

Thanks so much for responding!!!

What is the Tubiana grading system and what is stage N?
EDIT: I did some more research on this web site and answered this question.

I would like to learn more about the massaging with a ball you mentioned. I'll look in the other therapies page.

What is NAC?
EDIT: Found it!

How does Radiotherapy exactly work?
EDIT: Found it! Yikes!!!

Regarding vitamin D having an influence, I ran across a page where there was slight evidence that lack of vitamin D could be a contributor. Any evidence that this could be correct?

Re: I'm new here and have questions about my DC.

Here is a link to a treatise by Dr. Moermans on Dups that was cited by Dr. Denkler. I found the article very useful because it has lots of statistics on how likely it is to get the condition in more than one digit, connections between Dups and other conditions, age factors etc. I understand that no doctor can tell me whether I will get this condition in my other hand but its helpful to know what the statistics are. Its well organized so one can skip the icky parts on surgical methods.

Re: I'm new here and have questions about my DC.

I would like to learn more about the massaging with a ball you mentioned. I'll look in the other therapies page.
A: nothing special, I guess. Just rolling the ball over the nodule in an attempt to press and soften it. How often? How strongly? No idea.

Regarding vitamin D having an influence, I ran across a page where there was slight evidence that lack of vitamin D could be a contributor. Any evidence that this could be correct?
A: there are many theories about why people get Dupuytren, none is proven. I would forget about vitamin D. With normal nutrition hardly anybody iy lacking vitamins and such.
A good though medically detailed overview of the current status in Dupuytren research is probably http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa...i_n9273459/pg_1
