Salonpas uses menthol and methyl salicylate for pain relief. Same ingredients that are used in Bengay and Icy Hot products for pain relief which are a lot easier to use and to control the dose.

Todd, I took up rowing right around the time a knuckle pad started forming on my right hand. A year later, I was diagnosed. But, I don't believe the rowing was a factor -- I already had LD years before. The predisposition was already there.

pixi,

I am a firm believer that strenuous activities can stimulate the problems if a person has a predisposition for Dupuytren's.

Re: Any rowers out there?

Callie, I agree, but strangely it didn't seem to affect mine. I only had a single knuckle pad for about five years before I developed a nodule, and I gave up rowing long before.

Re: Any rowers out there?

There is not statistically significant evidence from studies of large groups of people with Duputren's other than those that are treatment related. You need a minimum cell size of 50 people meaning you would need 50 male middle aged ice climbers and compare them against a random sampling of rock climbers and the population. People who engage in such activities are going to be more aware of Dupuytren's just as runners have their own activity related health maladies with joint problems later in life. Did the running cause the joint problems or exacerbate the effects of aging?

With my hands holding a camera for hours at a time will cause cramping in the hand. Holding a paint brush to paint trim around the house will result in the same level of cramping in 5 minutes. I quite doing wedding photography as I was not comfortable that the cramping would not interfere with the results I could provide my clients.

I bicycle for hours but there is no impact from or to the Dupuytren's. I have a rowing shell but make a point of using a larger than average oar handle and not tightly holding my hands gripping the oar the entire time which it turns out produces better speed with the rowing as well. My wife as an avid runner for decades but now with her knees she has quite running and bicycles instead with her body weight supported by the bicycle and none of the pounding from the heel strikes on the pavement.

Dupuytren's is little different from a great many other maladies where one has to adapt and adjust and move on. Life happens regardless.

I agree. Dupuytren's has not caused any problems to my lifestyle.
