Finger Splints

I came across this website that has interesting splints of all kinds. If anyone is interested check out the ones that are specifically made for PIP joint. I have the splint for the PIP joint, as shown on the website, and I used it after my first NA, but my small finger PIP is now locked and the splint doesn't work for me anymore.... but it might be helpful to others with a beginning contraction of the PIP joint.

Re: Finger Splints

Dynamic splints are usually not recommended for Dupuytren's because the cord seems to be a reaction of the hand to pulling forces on the nodule. A static splint might be more appropriate. I am using the one on http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...techniques.html. The metal inlay can be bent and thus adjusted to the current angle of the affected finger. The glove is elastic to some extent and it's washable. It's elastic enough though to accomodate a swollen hand as is typical after enzyme injection.

Wolfgang,
You are probably correct, I wouldn't recommend just buying the splint, unless you consult first with your doctor or Hand Therapist... However, if I remember correctly, the brace was given to me by the Hand Therapist where I was getting my therapy following NA, back in 2006.

I asked Dr. Pess by email-- I'll follow up more when I see him-- about the abstract posted
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21693044
w/ regard to dynamic splinting and he said there are significant weaknesses to the study and opined that that there's no definitive answer to the splinting question. Earlier he had said I could do whatever I preferred. I did email the author to ask for a full copy of the paper but didn't receive a response.

Another thing on my list to Santa-- a 5 year splint study!

Re: Finger Splints

Diane, that study refers to treatment after surgery with complete removal of the cord, not after NA. Besides that, as Dr. Pess pointed out, there are some weaknesses in the study, like the various splints used and the not controled consistency of wearing the splint. Nevertheless, long-term splinting after surgery might not be very beneficial but it is not recommended anyway.

Re: Finger Splints

For what it's again..
NA both hands left pinkie 2009 right middle finger 2010 I believe both were pip joints pinkie was ver severe contracture.
The splints that I continue to wear every night ...have kept my fingers nearly perfect. Gues I am one of the lucky ones.
Splints were made by CHT and were molded to my palm and affected fingers. Velcro secures them as they are very easy to put on and take off....I have had them replced 3 times .....but insurance covered..
