Suitable for RT?

Hi All

I have 'active' DD in both hands, based on what I would describe as hot, itchy tingling sensations - especially in the soft tissue on the palm at the base of the fingers.

Only one hand has clearly visible nodules, the other hand is less distinct but I can feel callus-like bumps under the skin.

Does anybody know if RT can be used as a treatment on 'active' itchy areas even if nodules are not clearly present?
And, in particular, would Pof S treat at this stage?

I appreciate treatment is based on a physical examination, but the costs of going to Germany would only seem viable if I could get both hands done at the same time.

Thanks

Re: Suitable for RT?

I have 'active' DD in one hand, active based on recent nodule growth, soreness, aching, and so on. On my other hand it is less clear, some indications of hardness below the skin and a hand therapist was of the opinion I had DD in that hand too.

I went to see Prof S in Hamburg who examined both hands. He confirmed DD in both hands but only treated the one where I described indications of it being active at that moment.

Re: Suitable for RT?

Thanks for coming back to me on this Spanishbuddha.

Seems the key re treatment is if it feels active then?
Can you tell me from your own experience how often the condition becomes active and how long it lasts?

It's this that's driving me mad. Please tell me it stops!

At the very least, are there any pills or potions that can alleviate the symptoms?
Also, does an 'active' phase generally lead to nodules etc?

I have the same sensations in my feet which I am hoping won't lead to anything...

Yours hopefully....

Re: Suitable for RT?

MacD, I think it's different for everyone and there are no rules about how this disease progresses, or in many cases doesn't. For example you quote hot, itchy tingling, but I've never had that. I've also heard people talk about hot hands and feet that keep them awake, but again I've not experienced that. I've had soreness to touch, aching, sharp pain and 'tightness', with physical changes as nodules and cords develop. I've had the soreness for nearly 18 months and hope it will go having completed two rounds of radiation. But the aching and pains have stopped.

I just wonder if you have some form of neuropathic pain such as fibromyalgia - who diagnosed your condition? Do pain killers help?

Re: Suitable for RT?

Hi spanishbuddha

That's my confusion too - i.e. could this be something else in addition to DD.

I've read on the forum that so many docs refuse to accept 'sensory' symptoms of DD (tingling itchy sensations) so I assumed this was part of it anyway.

DD was confirmed by a consultant, but other tests are ongoing so I'll have to wait and see.
No, so far pain killers don't seem to help.

Re: Suitable for RT?

Mac D,

My symptoms were similar to spanishbuddha. I had a sore spot in my palm that quickly became a nodule. I had an aching, tingling, a feeling of someting crawling around in my palm, and pain that radiated from my hand to my shoulder. My hand felt cold, and a cord rapidly began to develop. I was miserable. Nothing stopped the pain until RT. Pain killers did not work. Heat (as in Bengay) did help it. I also got a heated mzttress pad that helped me be able to sleep.

My doctor treated me with RT on the diagnosis from a hand surgeon. The hand surgeon took one look, never touched my hand and diagnosed it as DD. He recommended that I wait for the hand to contract and then consider surgery. I had RT about 3 months after the diagnosis. I felt that since my DD appeared to be aggressive, it developed from a sore spot to a cord in less than 6 months. I could not afford to see if it would stop on it's own. I felt tht the window of time to have RT was at that time, and that if I waited 6 more months I would have had contraction and I wanted to stop the progression before that happened.

MacD, how about a drug used specifically for nerve related pain, such as lyrica? Maybe your physician has not tried that until more testing is complete. As qn aside I have personally known some diagnosis, admittedly not of DD, to be done by trying different drugs until one works and then using that as a basis to confirm a diagnosis!

Thanks for the suggestion.
Docs have mentioned Gabapentin - I've seen some others on the forum say this worked for them.
