Women with Dupuytren's

I'm very curious about the age of onset for women on this forum. Everything I've read says that men are affected way more often than women. I'm 55 and noticed my first nodule several years ago. The condition stayed the same for years until this year when it became very active. I don't know if it's coincidental that just as I hit menopause, it became active. I'm wondering if this could account for the disproportionate numbers of men that get it. Maybe there's a protective factor that estrogen levels provide younger women. What do you all think?

Laurie,

I never thought about that possible link. I started developing Dup's right after my 53rd birthday. I had been post menopausal for about 4 years. My grandmother and aunt developed Dups in their late 70's to 80's. My mother might be developing it in her right pinky finger and she is 76. When I developed my first nodule it went from a sore spot to a cord in less that 6 months. I can't put my "finger" on what triggered mine. My life style had not changed, hadn't been sick in years, and had not seriously hurt my hand.

Re: Women with Dupuytren's

I was in my early 50's when I first got DD...I guess I never thought of the connection of it and menopause...

My sister, however, didn't get it until her late 60's. Our older sister doesn't have DD.

Re: Women with Dupuytren's

Hmmmm! Good question about possible relationship to estrogen levels. I started developing nodules at age 69 and they were what I would describe as aggressive then. I have taken HRT for years, now down to the smallest dosage - once a week patch with dosage of .025mg/day.
Wonder if this has been researched.

Re: Women with Dupuytren's

My mother developed her first nodule with the age of 80. Generally, little is known about why men develop Dupuytren's earlier http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...stribution.html.

Estrogen/progesteron levels might be able to influence progression because tamoxifen does to some extent http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...s_research.html. Tamoxifen modulates estrogen reception but it reduces estrogen reception and stimulates progesteron reception. Yet the effect of tamoxifen is considered to be due to its reduction of TGFBeta, a growth rate factor for myofibroblasts.

Re: Women with Dupuytren's

I noticed my nodule when turned 52. I was just beginning menopause.

My mom is 85 and has a couple of nodules and cords but no contractions. I'm not sure when she first got the nodules though. (I was the one who diagnosed her - she has so many more important medical issues that she never brought up her hands with her doctor - she thought it was beginning arthritis.)

I started menopause in my mid-40's and first noticed a nodule at age 60.

I was also postmenopausal when I was diagnosed with Dupuytren's at age 57. The only other person in my family that I know of who has the condition is my father, who is 82.

YES I had started menopause when the nodules became noticeable. It is now 12 years later and the disease has completely disfigured my hands. I have had 2 procedures and my hands were fine for about 6 months after each procedure. Now I am barely able to type. I never took estrogen at all.

Re: Women with Dupuytren's

So....., I don't understand. Why haven't any of you considered surgery?
I am 64 and Dup began to show up in my right hand about 6 months ago. It hurts and seems to be growing faster in the last few weeks. My father had in both hands and by the time he died both were totally curled and unusable.
I am researching as we speak to find an excellent surgeon - that is how I found this forum because I do not what hands that won't work.
