DC after surgery and rsd

I had surgery 7 months ago on my left hand for DC in pinkie. Ten days post surgery my left ring finger could not bend or straighten. It was fine before the surgery. After 4 mos of phys therapy and two rounds of steroid shots in joints I am left with neither pinkie or ring finger capable of bending or straightening and I have both passive and active pain. My left pinkie is now bent at 110 degrees and it was at 90 degrees pre surgery.
Ques 1: The latest referrals from drs is stellate ganglion block but if I was special enough to get RSD - will I now be special enough to end up totally paralyzed? What are side effects? Does it work?
Ques 2: Will NA work on this hand that has already been through surgery and RSD?

Re: DC after surgery and rsd

I'd certainly recommend that you contact some of the docs who have done NA for advanced stages of Dupuytren's. Others have reported on this Forum that 90 or more degrees contracture has been released or significantly improved. Sounds like yours is very active. If so, RT would be something to consider after NA if NA flattens out your hand some.

You can email pictures of your hand to some docs and they will email back what they think they can do for you. That's what I did. Mine was not as contracted as yours, but it certainly helps to get info straight from the doctor to have some idea what can be done.

Where do you live?

Dr. Eaton and Dr. Denkler in Larkspur/San Francisco, CA are both highly rated. Depends upon whether you live in the USA.

I live in Austin Texas but either Florida or SF would be possible to combine with family vacation

Re: DC after surgery and rsd

I have heard great things about Dr. Eaton. I happened used Dr. Denkler. Larkspur is a delightful town in Marin County and near the Golden State Bridge. If you email Dr. Denkler photos of your hand, he'll email you back, very likely within one day. I can't say enough about him and others on the Forum have had great success with him. I chose him because of what others had said.

Go to my profile and email me if you have any questions or want to chat about your DC. I'm available to help in anyway that I can.

Re: DC after surgery and rsd

to Loriem....

I also have a very favorable experience with Dr. Denkler in Larkspur, near San Francisco...Dr. Denkler, is a wonderful doctor, and there are very positive things written about him and his staff on this forum.

I had NA with Dr. Denkler in July 2006 on a 45 degree contracture in my LH pinkie PIP joint...Unfortunately the NA, although totally successful at first, didn't last...after six months, the contracture returned to Pre-NA measurement, and is now more contracted than before....Totally NOT Dr. Denkler's fault....that is the nature of the disease and PIP on pinkie contractures are the hardest to obtain good long lasting results.

I am having the same finger redone with NA, this coming March in Jupiter, FL by Dr. Eaton. (although I live in southern CA, we'll be there on vacation).

I will report on this forum and I am hoping to have more permanent results this time around.

I have also had radiation treatment on my OTHER hand (that has only nodules for now) with good results, as well as radiation on two large nodules on my left food (Ledderhose). My radiation was done by Dr. Tripuraneni at Scripps in LaJolla, CA.

Feel free to contact me by email through this forum...or ask more questions on the forum...there are many wonderful people who give of their time to share the experiences they have gained through this wonderful venue for fellow sufferers... I'm forever grateful to this forum and its members.

Best of luck to you
LubaM.

Re: DC after surgery and rsd

THE REASON I AM SOOOO CONFIDENT DOC EATON IS THE GREATEST:
11 MONTHS AGO I HAD 95 DEGREE,PIP, LITTLE FINGER. STILL PERFECT.EVEN THE NODULES ARE MUCH MUCH SMALL. I STILL WEAR A NIGHT SPLINT..IN FACK I JUST HAD A NEW ONE MADE.
WEARING THE SPLINT IS GREAT INSURANCE,AND A SMALL PRICE TO PAY !

Re: DC after surgery and rsd

Brian....good for you about the splint... when I had my NA in 2006 I only wore the night splint for about 3 months. I believe that is one of the reasons the Dup. came back. I'm having the NA redone, this time with Dr. Eaton, and plan to wear the night splint for a very long time.

My contracture (three and a half years later) has gone from 45 degrees to about 90 degrees and I also have a boutonierre deformity on the DIP joint of the same finger. According to Dr. Eaton who I consulted by email and phone, he will be able to correct that as well.

After my NA with Dr. Eaton on March 15, I'll report on this forum.

Re: DC after surgery and rsd

I think it is great that we have doctors who do NA that are so good that we are touting their greatness. It was only a very few years ago that there were none in the US doing NA. Dr. Eaton was the first. Dr. Denkler started doing NA soon after. Both are great as are others who are now doing NA. To some degree, I believe the effectiveness of NA, RT or whatever other treatment depends upon the Dupuytren's in each case. It varies. I am confident that my DD would have continued to progress and contractracture increase after NA if I had not had RT, no matter who did my NA.

All of us now have these alternative treatments available, thanks to the admirable doctors all around the USA who are willing to do them. I applaud them all!

I again applaud this website, the way we know what the options are and where we can find doctors who will perform the alternative treatments.

Thank you!!
