Pain after the surgery

Local or general anaesthetic depends of course e.g. how difficult the surgery is, how skilled the surgeon is and what the patient wants, etc. I had my 2nd DC-surgery in 10 weeks to-day, for 6 hours ago (40 degrees in the Little and 10 in the Ring- finger in both hands, mostly on palm area). The surgeon made local anaesthetic so "local" that I could sign the VISA- bill right after the operation.

Of course one feels the anaesthetic needles in the beginning, but most of the pain comes from the pressure band (pressure 250) which prevents blood to flow into the palm and fingers during the operation (placed 20 cm above the hand). This pressure pain can be eliminated by pain killer (direct into blood) if necessary e.g. if the operation lasts longer than expected (max. 2 hours). I was lucky after the operations not having pain afterwards. It helps to keep the hand elevated when possible for a few days, but there was no problems to drive a car already. And as You know, we do not all have automatic gears up here.

What do I want to say? Don't worry! In general there are no reasons to be afraid of the pain during or after the surgery. The situation can be helped by positive thinking. And, if it is not enough, thre are also pain killers without side- effects. There are no reasons to postpone the surgery too much, because the situation and pain may become more severe. In fact, one never knows the next step from Dupe's side.

local/general anesthesia

Thanks, Gary & Teemu!

I'm still apprehensive, but not nearly as much as before. I know that surgery is the only way to get me anywhere close to back to FULL employability; that doesn't mean I am not afraid, but you're helping me.

Thanks again!
Bret

I am about to have surgery on my hand for Dupuytren's. My main concern was the pain afterward, after your comments i feel a lot better about having the surgery.
Thank You.

Pain

I have had four operations so far for DC and never had to take the prescribed pain medication.
