LLLT
I know this is not a popular subject for this forum, but I have just completed 3 weeks of LLLT, 9 treatments, (15 minutes each) and am thrilled with the results. When I started therapy, two fingers on both hands had a 30% contracture. My left hand is completely straight, my right...almost! Yes, I still have the pits and divots and I do realize that I may need the same treatment in the future, but that's OK! I will continue with the stretching exercises they taught me and just take my chances. Just to let me know it worked for me!

If it works...
If it works, good for you! We all know that this condition varies greatly from one individual to another.
It would be helpful if you could provide more detailed information on this experience. Thanks.

Hand exercises
Hi Val, I stand in front of a desk or table, palms down and keep my palms pressed down for a few seconds at a time. I also massage my palms & press my fingers back while watching TV, etc. It's gotten to be a good habit!

Stretching exercises
Hi Gay,
I do the same thing and at night I have a wedge shaped foam pillow that I put under my regular pillow and sleep with my head resting on my hand to keep it flat with most of the fingers underneath the wedge and my DC ring finger on top of the wedge. After a year since a DC nodule appeared, I still have as much range as my non-DC ring finger on the other hand. I don't know if the contracture has not started yet or whether the stretching is effective.
Thanks. -Val

Stretching
Val, From my experience, I had full range of finger dexterity for the 5-6 years that I had the nodules. It was only after the contraction started that I lost the flexibility. Some people go their whole lives with the nodules and never lose the use of their fingers. Just be careful (in my opinion), not to stretch too much. For some people, stretching is one of the triggers that may start contraction. Good luck.

STRETCHING
HI GAY. I MIGHT ADD THAT WHEN I CUT A TENDON ON MY FINGER SEVERAL YEARS AGO PART OF THE PT WAS STRETCHING, BUT WHAT REALLY HELPED WAS TO SOAK MY HAND IN WARM WATER FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND SWISH IT AROUND LIKE A SPA, THIS RELAXED THE TENDONS AND MADE RANGE OF MOTION BETTER. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WILL HELP IN DC OR NOT, BUT I THINK I WILL TRY IT.

ONLY THE MESSENGER
PARTIAL COPY OF A MESSAGE WRITTEN 9/28/02 & posted 5/2003.
"I spoke with my Certified Occupational Therapist this morning with regard to LLLT. I was informed that she has 3 machines of varying intensity and has stopped their use. She claims that all they accomplish is realigning or rearranging the scar tissue, without removal or beneficial results.
A prominent physician reported similar experience with LLLT as my therapist: Of no use. It sits quietly in his facility as well."
I think his confirmation should put this issue to sleep.
That's the best I can do for you on this subject: It is your decision to pursue its merits, if you so desire.
