I play bagpipes. My right hand has DC much worse than my left. I only have the beginning tell-tale lump in my palm of left hand, my right however has large cord going up into pinky which restricts movement on my right ring and pinky fingers. I still pretty much have full flexibility of the fingers, they just don't lie flat anymore as the contracture is at the palm and bottom finger joint. So far that has not hampered playing as the fingers are kept straight but the hand bent so I still have good movement. My right hand has gotten worse over the course of the last year, so my wife and I are looking at a European vacation, Paris France, England, Ireland and Scotland probably next summer. I will not risk my hand/fingers to normal surgery available in the U.S. Hopefully I'll get NA done then enjoy the rest of my vacation, or have it done at the end. Good luck to all out there.

I play classical piano - as does surgeon Dr. Badois, which made for a more entertaining session than I'd envisaged. I can now do octaves again.
10 minutes after the "op" - seems like an overstatement for a 30-minute chat - I had a beer in my hand, and I returned to work the following day. I seem to recall I was doing some spadework that weekend.
One year later I can unreservedly recommend NA and Dr. Badois in particular.
As this annoying condition doesn't let up, I'll probably have to go for a refresher in a couple of years, but I'll do so with a quiet mind.

I play classical piano and bassoon. Had the operation 6 days ago. The 4th finger on the left hand was at a 35 degree angle, could not play scales properly and extra notes would go down when I played a chord.
Hoping the recovery is trouble free. I have a bit of numbness in the pinky finger but I don't think it is going to be a serious probelms..... we'll see.

It is now 16 days post-op. Had a nasty infection for a few days but it is now gone....
Today I spent a few minutes at the piano..... the scales were much easier to play. I am most gratified. The bassoon shall wait a while longer since I dont want weight on my hand just yet.

Hi, all, I have searched for an answer to the soreness and lumps in my palms, and finally DD seems like the answer. I am 60 years old, write Christian music, play a keyboard and sing...I find that my hands this year have become so much worse. We lived in Fla for 11 years, and they did not seem to be so bad,but after spending the last two wintrs in Michigan, My hands are very sore and painful, and I am wondering if being in the cold has made the difference. My right hand has several nodules in the palm and the chords seem to be drawing to my middle and ring fingers, also feeling a lot of numbness when I stretch my hands. My left hand has one large nodule below ring finger in palm and is pulling a chord to pinkie and ring fingers both. Any ideas on being more comfortable? I have used hot water soaks, and heating pad, in addition to stretching but doesnt' seem to help a lot....thanks

To Carol Ann

why are you asking the group questions.... go to a Board Certified Hand surgeon and find out what is going on.... it might not be Dupuytren's but if it is you had better do something about it.

see my post just below yours....

MUSICAL HANDS!

I have been getting a lot of tightness in my hands in the last 9 months or so, and find gripping, particularly in the morning, very difficult now.

I teach the piano and am very concerned, naturally.

The ring finger on my left hand is showing the dupuytren's signs of hardness. But all my hand is very tight, and am having some trouble with stretching octaves and large chords.

My father had this complaint, and my 26 year old daughter has hammer toes! We are also from the north of England and the Vikings were there I think! So it seems very likely to me that dupuytren's is the problem.

Must go to the doctor again. He said it was arthritus, but xrays have shown I have very little for my age (61 years).

better not self diagnose... if at all possible get to a certified hand surgeon. My operation ( I am a pianist and bassoonist) was successful..... almost 4 weeks now. My right ring finger would go down when I tried to play octaves and chords... now perfect, no trouble at all.

I HAVE HAD THE SYMPTOMS OF DC. FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS. I WILL NOW LOOK INTO SURGERY BECAUSE MY LITTLE FINGER IN MY LEFT HAND ALMOST REACHES MY PALM AND MY HAND IS BEING TO TINGLE. THIS IS FIRST TIME ON A CHAT. BUT AM SHOCKED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE PLAY THE PIANO. I AM OF IRISH, SCOTTISH, ENGLISH, GERMAN ANCESTERY, I DO NOT DRINK, DIABETUS RUNS IN THE FAMILY BUT I DO NOT HAVE . I DO HAVE AUTO IMMUNE DECEASES, AS THYROID PROBLEMS, HAVE HAD GRAVES DECEASE, ETC. ALL AUTO IMMU. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS COULD BE CONNECTED TO AUTO IMM.AND AS A CHILD I PLAYED THE PIANO QUITE A BIT AND INTHE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS BEFORE I RETIRED WORKED ON A COMPUTER ABOUT 6 HOURS ADAY. GLAD TO HAVE FOUND THIS CHAT ROOM , GETTING ALOT OF INFO. GOOD AND BAD. GOOD LUCK TO ALL LINDA
