Disability for DC ?

I have had DC in both hands for some time. One operation (before I was aware of NA). Surgery was initially fine but by 1 year the finger was worse than before surgery. My hands are bad now and its spreading to my feet.

Though I hate this option, what is the possiblity of being declared disabled and recieving disability compensation as I have limited use of my hands.

Anyone ever try disability?

thanks,

davey

Heated Rice bags help

my dupy has been progressing for 3 years. Both hands affected, My ring finger was curled 15-20% when I started using microwave heated ricebags 4-5 times a day and Vit-E seemds to have reduced curling and helps reduce pain. I can now fully extend all fingers. I do flexibility exercises every day. I have a microwave beside my bed to heat the bags up during the night if needed. This may be a temporary reversal, but it helps with my keyboarding. This has not helped my hand strength, cannot open a jar due to lateral movement pain, but so it does.

heat

Yes, I have noticed the positive effect of heat on my hands. I soak in a hot tub each cool morning. I lobsterize. My hands stop hurting and my two bent fingers become pencil straight.

pain

Warm water or air made a difference for me during the contracting phase of DD. I just had a dull ache an not so much of a sharp pain. After surgery, this feeling (dull ache) was gone.

dc

Having chemo for cancer intravenously injected into my wrists has apparently caused dupuytrens which I will ultimately have to have operated on as they are growing slowly but surely. I have trouble opening jars etc but not a lot of pain. Anyone else had this experience?

Sue,

Sorry to hear abut your condition. The only good news I can offer (and you need some!) is that you may indeed *not* ultimately need Open Surgery. Stick with us kid and you'll learn why!

I do get cramping sometimes when working with my hands, like chopping vegetables, opening jars, etc. Is this unusual?

Sue,

There are some very good jar openers on the market especially an item marked OXO, which I use.

Good luck.

dc

hi folks, i am of course new to the forum. i was diagnosed with dc late last year, after having put off a doctors visit for about 3 years until the effects became to obvious to avoid. i am american but live in germany so i am not sure as to the state of the art of medicine. i am most effected on the right hand but the left has started though i can still lay the hand flat. the pain is more a burning itching but is constant. i have been advised not to have surgury. i have never suffered a chronic disease before so am at a bit nervous about where this will lead, and all my research seems not to offer much hope. anyway, i am interested in sharing experience both good and bad. thanks
