Scared

Hi I'm 20 years old and have self-diagnosed my self with Dupuytren's disease. It's obvious to me that I have the condition, and am sure I am not mistaken. The progressive symptoms I may encounter scare the life out of me. I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice for me. Also I live in Toronto, Canada, if anyone knows a good doctor that they can refer me to I would be most grateful. Thank very much.

self-diagnosis

Hi Christina,

I would really suggest to first consult with your doctor before you proceed with any therapy. There are several other reasons for getting nodules on the palm with a wide range of root causes. Obviously the right therapy depends very much on the actual disease, if you have a ganglion it might even go away by itself, in other cases more urgent therapies might be required.

Should you really have Dupuytren then don't be scared and don't let it spoil your life. Dupuytren is certainly an inconvenience but it is not a dangerous disease. It can be treated, at least to the extent that you can live with it without major problems. As you are young, it probably is a shock to realize that you might suffer from something that cannot be cured by simple medication but might stay with you for the rest of your life. But having been suffering from Dupuytren myself since 20 years I can assure you that it is something you get used to and that some therapies can help you to get along with it.

Sometimes I fear that we exaggerate the issues in our forums. We love forums because new ideas can be exchanged and get us exited but you need to keep in mind that to the most extent it is those patients who are frustrated or scared that visit forums. Those who went through successful therapies just go away and live happily.

Wishing a quick recovery and a happy life

Wolfgang

Thank you

Christina, thank you for your kind response! I am very glad I could help you a little. And now you know why we love forums and specifically this one ...

Should you really have Dupuytren you might also have a look at our (Dupuytren Society) web site www.dupuytren-online.info. It informs about therapies of Dupuytren and related diseases.

All the best to you!

Wolfgang

Hi Christina,

Wolfgang is right, you do need a proper diagnosis talk to your md. Do you have family that has DC? If yes then mention that when you see the doctor because they might not diagnos you because of your age.

Dr Pess (New Jersey) has been trained in NA and is about an 8 hour drive from TO. If you map quest his office you will find the driving straight forward. If you don't have a car then check the train schedule at Union
station.

Good luck.

Dr. Spacek

Bonjour Richard aux Quebec,

Thank you for writing about Dr. Spacek. We desperately need to hear more about her work from patients who have had it. Dr Spacek has not made herself available via internet/email for NA so many have been reluctant to try her as the cost of getting on a plane for a consultation then possibly finding out ones DC is too advanced or complicated for NA would be frustrating/expensive - otherwise, I think she would be swamped with Canadian patients particularly as she is willing to take provincial health plan coverage. Just look at Drs. Eaton...Zidel and Pess.....they are all getting work from this website...lots of it. :-) She's like having a diamond but not being able to get it out of the ground.

Please.....if you know any other patients who have had NA with her.... please have them post....or....if you could make *her* aware of this website...then she could come and see how vital it is for us patients to be able to send her photos ...please do so....maybe answer questions like Dr. Denkler did... that would be wonderful and would alleviate many fears.

By the way...your english is great, plus bon du mon Francais. :-)

Fellow Ontarion.

Elena Spacek - Very long waiting list.

Hi,

I just have a discussion with her secretary and the waiting list is more than a year for NA.

I will go to U.S. because the waiting list is shorter.

Good luck.
