Dr. Benhaim - Initial Visit re NA

Hi All:

I'm happy to give a stellar report about Dr. Prosper Benhaim, a UCLA Certified Hand Surgeon.

I met with Dr. Benhaim yesterday about my Dupuytren’s Disease, and was very impressed. He is bright, caring, open-minded, and friendly.

Regarding Dr. Benhaim’s experience with NA: Dr. Benhaim has been doing NA for almost one year. In that time, he has done approximately 20 NA Procedures, including some procedures on PIP joints.

Dr. Benhaim was trained for NA by Dr. Keith Denkler. Dr. Benhaim was very complimentary about Dr. Denkler’s skills. Dr. Benhaim also said that because of the excellent training he received from Dr. Denkler, he does not feel that it is necessary for him to travel to France for NA training.

At the outset of our meeting, I told Dr. Benhaim that I had already planned a trip to San Francisco to have the NA procedure done by Dr. Denkler. Much to his credit, Dr. Benhaim said that he would not want to discourage me from seeing Dr. Denkler. In fact, Dr. Benhaim offered to send to Dr. Denkler his report on our June 7 meeting. Dr. Benhaim also offered to be my “local” CHS to work in conjunction with Dr. Denkler on post-NA matters.

Bottom Line: I definitely will continue to see Dr. Benhaim.

If I had not previously decided to travel to San Francisco to have Dr. Denkler perform the NA, then I would have had Dr. Benhaim do the NA in Los Angeles.

As it is, I feel blessed to have Dr. Benhaim there to see me on an on-going basis. After all, it’s a heck of a lot easier for me to get from Orange County to Los Angeles than to San Francisco.

To all of my fellow Dupuytren’s Disease sufferers in Southern California, I strongly encourage you to see Dr. Benhaim. The phone number to call for appointments is 310-319-1234.

Good luck.

Mark

Academia is the Target

Mark, that's a great report!

It is my hope and anticipation that after Eaton's presentation in September the previous anti NA sentiment that had been prevalent among the top CHS working and teaching at UCLA will continue to melt. Right now Dr. Benhaim is ahead of the curve within his professional community over there. However, I know first hand that because of *his* influence, the top man at UCLA is "watching Eaton" and told me personally he will go to his presentation in Washington.

To really see NA come to the fore, the consensus at the major universities that teach new CHS must change. UCLA is just one of the keys, but an important one. There are some brilliant and highly respected CHS at UCLA and their influence nationally would be Key. (and that's not just West Coast Bias) Dr. Benhaim is now, and always will be, the forerunner of NA at UCLA. I believe that Dr. Denkler has some level of influence at Stanford.

We are so fortunate to have these excellent Mds that are willing to push the NA envelope within their close circle of associates tied to academia. CA looks to be in good hands and in good shape for the future.

Dr. Benhaim & NA for Dupuytrens Contracture

Tommy & Randy:

I appreciate your comments regarding my Post about Dr. Benhaim.

I wanted to articulate clearly how impressed I was with Dr. Benhaim’s demeanor & knowledge. I’m glad to hear that my message came across.

Randy is so right in stating that we are lucky to have an open-minded expert like Dr. Benhaim at UCLA.

Randy, I'm also lucky that you're around - because it was in one of your Posts that I first saw that Dr. Benhaim was familiar with NA.

Take care.

Mark

Major Progress

Thanks Mark,

All of us who have found this site and learned that have an option to OS should consider ourselves fortunate. I more than most. I have a biology that does very poorly with Open Surgery, with a left hand that is about 1/2 crippled form the experience three years ago. Most do far better than I. Fortunately I have used NA to save my dominate right. Without this site where would I be Today? Done as a semipro musician and completely done typing as a professional programmer. I'm still here because we need to finish the job of helping to make NA an accepted first line of defense. It's been an amazing ride to see how effective this one little site has been toward that end. It's not over quite yet..............

Dr. Denkler~sq~s Comments Re Dr. Benhaim

Hello Southern California DD Sufferers:

As you know from my prior Post on this Thread, I'm encouraging you to see Dr. Prosper Benhaim (of UCLA) about your Dupuytren’s Disease.

I've already told you about Dr. Benhaim's experience with NA.

Now, I have some new information for you...

Dr. Keith Denkler (of UC San Francisco) just sent me an Email that gives more detail about Dr. Benhaim's training.

Parenthetically, I think you are all aware of Dr. Denkler’s sterling reputation as an expert in NA.

If Dr. Denkler’s name is not familiar, just poke around this Patients' Forum for a few minutes & you’ll see how well-respected Dr. Denkler is.

As you'll see from the excerpt below, Dr. Benhaim was Dr. Denkler's student at UCSF.

Thus, Dr. Denkler is quite familiar with Dr. Benhaim's skills.

With Dr. Denkler's permission, I've pasted below what he told me about Dr. Benhaim.

I hope Dr. Denkler's comments encourage you to pick up the phone & make an appointment with Dr. Benhaim. We'll all benefit if we can help Dr. Benhaim carry the NA banner for us in Southern California!

Here is what Dr. Denkler sent me:

"Dr. Benheim trained in Surgery and Plastic Surgery at UCSF where he was one of my students and he was an outstanding trainee.

At the Chicago Plastic Surgery Meeting in Sept 2005 Dr. Benheim and I spoke re: NA.

I told him what great success I was having and he came to me in Oct. 2005 where I did NA on 8-10 fingers while he observed.

I am glad he is doing it and he works in a top hand surgery group in LA."

Dr Benhaim

Hi Mark
Since I live in Seattle I guess i'll go see Der Benhaim now instead of our good Dr Eaton- that flight to FL is way too long for me.

I'm getting gready to head out there and will report back after intervention
I love this forum. Thx all

Dr. Benhaim & NA for Dupuytrens Contracture

Miriam:

I'm glad my Post about Dr. Benhaim helped you.

I believe that sharing is at the heart of what our Forum predecessors had in mind, so I'm doing nothing but paying back the folks who have helped me.

I've only been using the Forum for a few weeks, but it has been very helpful for me also.

In fact, it's only because of the Forum that I found out about NA. So, I feel indebted to the great people who have made this Forum so lively.

Someone on the Forum posted a list which indicated that Dr. Benhaim had some experience with NA. That's how I came across his name.

But, no one knew much at all about Dr. Benhaim, except that he was at UCLA & had some kind of connection with Dr. Denkler.

I apparently was the first person who has met with Dr. Benhaim to post a message about him.

I've tried to help other DD sufferers by sharing my positive experience with Dr. Benhaim.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing how your meeting with Dr. Benhaim goes.

You're the second person who has indicated that she/he will now see Dr. Benhaim after my Post about him.

I wish good luck for both of you.

I also hope that Dr. Benhaim leads the charge for all of us by educating other California Certified Hand Surgeons about NA.

Mark

west coast NA

It's certainly nice to have west coast options for NA. A few months ago I was debating whether or not to fly back to Florida for another round with Dr. Eaton. I now feel confident enough not to leave California. However, if I was to have my PIP pinky done in the immediate future I'd drive or fly the 400 miles from L.A. up to the Bay area for Dr. Denkler's services. Perhaps it's not an issue but at this stage I'd go with the doc who performed NA a few hundred times as opposed to 20.
