Would be most grateful if anyone can tell me whether needle aponeurotomy treatment for dupuytrens is considered to be a recognized and accepted procedure by the Ontario Medical Association. Would OHIP pay for this where it is prescribed by an Ontario physician? Thanks for any information on the subject.

Dear Fellow Ontarion,

1) There are no Paris-trained NA practitioners in Ontario and NA is not covered by OHIP. However, NA is done by Dr. Pess in New Jersey www.jerseycentralhand.com. If you do a mapquest from your location to his - driving might be an option for you. :-)

2) NA is also performed by Dr. Elena Spacek in Montreal. She is paris-trained and does accept OHIP. I have not heard any comments on her work but information can be found about her on this forum. Personally, I stick with doctors who are Paris-trained and whose work has received positive comments.

Good luck,

Frances

Good luck with your decision.

Dear Fellow Ontarion Thanks for the speedy reply. I am actually a Manitoban and was hoping that if OHIP paid for needle aponeurotomy as an accepted treatment for Dupuytrens that I could prevail on Manitoba Medical to do the same.

I am a bit confused. Are You saying that Dr. Spacek accepts OHIP for needle aponeurotomy and that OHIP would then pay for the procedure?

Thank you from a fellow Canadian.

Yes Dr Spacek accepts OHIP and my guess is that she probably accepts your provincial plan as well.

I'm off to diner but will be back later, take care for now

Dear Fellow Ontarion

Sorry, I am new to internet messaging. My last paragraph should have read:
"Did you mean that if Dr. Spacek accepts OHIP that OHIP would then pay for the procedure."

Thank you from a fellow Canadian.

Well.....here's the thing.....when I contacted her office the secretary told me they take OHIP, *however* if you ask OHIP if it's covered they say no because they consider NA experimental (I have the letter). So...you've got me...I'm not sure what she is billing it under. Perhaps she bills it as an out-of-province procedure that is acceptable in Quebec therefore covered under OHIP? I don't know.

Perhaps phoning her office and asking if she's seen any Manitoba patients is the answer?

I should add.....I wrote my letter to OHIP almost 4 years ago and there have been a lot of changes in the advance of NA since then. As you can see in the thread below entitled 'Insurance to Cover NA possible' there is a letter that Steve drafted up to contest his denial.

There is also a fair amount of information on this website as to how to make a presentation and what can go in them but but it's all in different threads because the information has evolved as denials came and answers arose. God help us if this website ever went down. :-(

Personally, I think it's time to form a DC Association to help provide information and support to DC sufferers, particularly people like yourself who are willing to put the time into making presentations etc. I myself am almost there as I see NA as a great way to reduce Health Care expenses not to mention reduce patient recovery time. If NA were available in every city the relapse time would not be an issue.

Take Care for now.....got an idea as I was writing so I'll go and make that new post. :-)

Frances

There is a doctor who does the NA procedure, at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, for your information.
I saw him in June 2005.

The doctor has not been trained in France in NA.
