never heard of this before

I have just returned from what i thought was a routine look at me right little finger. Having been diagnosed with Dup's disease, I have been told that at a 30 degree bend they may want to operate within the next twelve months- with a 50:50 chance of loosing my finger.
Anyone had this, and what was the outcome?
Any help would be much appreciated

Welcome

Welcome to the website Liam.

There is lots of info here about DC and how NA helped people - many with contractions much worse then yours - and amputation was not even part of the exquation. Read the posts until your eyes turn red, then make your decision about the surgery. Unfortunately not all surgeons are up on NA and when speaking with their patients, some surgeons choose words that alarm. Dang shame.

www.handcenter.org is a website that is very helpful in explaining NA fully.

Good luck.
Good luck.

DO NOT let them cut on your hand! Read, read, read about NA before you do anything. Practically all of us have DD here who are posting. For me, NA is the answer and I have scheduled my appointment. I repeat, DO NOT let them cut you!

Liam,

I was considering surgery on my left ring finger as it had currled into my hand. Luckily I did some research on NA on the internet (Biospecifics.com) and decided the NA was worth a try. If was fantastic. No risk, no pain and very little expense. Since I had my first treatment, I have had two more treatments on 5 fingers (they were not as bad). Today, I have 15 degree contracture on my left ring finger and will have it straighted soon by another NA treatment. All my other fingers are still straight. I haven't had surgery, but from the postings all over the internet, I wouldn't dream of doing it.

If you are in England, it is easy to get to Paris and other places where they do the procedure.

Good Luck,
Wayne

Hi, Liam. My uncle was named Liam. My right little finger (pinkie) contracted to 30 degres. I went to Paris and had a 30 minute procedure to correct the contracture.
Within two to four years I will need to repeat the procedure. Decide for yourself about how you value your
finger(s.) Alternatives exist at moderate cost.
Personally, I am attached to my finhers and prefer to
maintain them. Consider contacting Dr. Lermusiaux in
Paris or any member of his Hospital group. The hospital
is L'Hopital Lariboisiere. A web site exists. Post again
if you need more specifics. Please wait before submitting
to surgery/amputation. Viable alternatives exist.

best advice was ~dq~get out~dq~

Liam, unless there is something VERY unusual about your finger that we don't know about, for him to quote a 50-50 chance of amputation is either a sign of complete ignorance, or total incompetence.

Amputation is rare, and used only in very severe cases, and is usually planned, not a complication of a routine fasciectomy.

Amputation very last resort

Before I contacted Dr.Eaton and had him release my fingers,
I had two appointments with a local hand surgeon.

On the second visit,I asked about NA and he refused to discuss that possibility. His last comment was " When you are ready you will come back".

He did have me consult with the physical therapist that would have worked to help me regain use of fingers once the splints were removed.

In jest, I suggested that perhaps I should just let him remove the offending fingers.

She indicated that was a very bad idea as people that had that done suffered from "phantom pains" in the misssing fingers.
