Hi back in 07 I spoke to Prof. Seegenschmiedt what the difference was being treated with Proton or Electrons . The result is the same. The older machine used Protons and the later machines use Electrons. The later machines are more expensive and more costly to run. Hope this helps.

The older machines are using x-rays, the newer ones electrons. There is a difference in depth distribution and in energy density that is deposited but the general believe is that the effect on Dupuytren's is pretty much the same.
X-rays, specifically when used for treating skin problems, often have low energy which makes them easier to tolerate but they have less effect in depth. With relatively thick nodules electrons might be better adjustable and might be better focussed on the Dupuytren's tissue. But electron treatment is much more expensive than x-rays.

Radiation Therapy Techniques
I think the figure below illustrates the different DOSE PROFILES related to PENETRATION DEPTH of the different types of radiation comming from electrons, photons or protons:
The best techniquue seems to be the 4 MeV electrons combined with some "bolus" material to alter the true penetration depth by the amount of the thickness of the bolus (e.g. 5 - 10 mm). Thus, the electrons are fully stopped at a certain depth and [url]no further dose is transferred. It is used for "shallow volumes" like the foot sole and hand palm ....
Photons penetrate far more and reach "the other side of the volume", i.e. backside of hand, which is really unnecessary in Dupuytren or Ledderhose treatment when using radiation therapy
I got 4 MeV electrons with 5 mm bolus on my hand and 6 MeV electrons with 10 mm bolus for both my feet ...

Larry, the energy of x-rays used for treating Dupuytren's is typically in the 100 - 150 keV range. The depth distribution is much shallower than with MeV energy which has about 10-100x as much energy. Low energy x-rays are therefore less suitable for treating thick nodules.
