Prof S here i come!

Hi all,

Just to let you know I've been in touch with Prof S in Hamburg and I've decided to go see him for a consultation only.

Im in the UK so i figured for the price (around £100) its worth it. I've sent emails and Prof S thinks i may be worthwhile for rt. I didn't want to go straight for therapy incase he says i don't need it plus the fact i can do it in one day id take the chance.

It will be a 21 hour day for a 20 min max meeting! Seems crazy but that makes it cheaper and im lucky i have the option, plus anyone with LD will know its worth it! ill ask as much as i can remember and let you know how goes if anyone's interested.

Thanks

My experience with ProfS is that the consultation, including examination, recording, Q&A, discussion will take a good hour and half, so not just 20 minutes. Although that would cover all four extremities, which is usually needed to get a holistic view.

It's a shame you can't stay at least overnight and take in Hamburg, but it's not at its best anyway on February. So if you do proceed to treatment with him, Hamburg in late spring and summer is fantastic.

Best wishes

Re: Prof S here i come!

Hi Spanishbudda,

How long ago was it since you visited? Have you found the RT to work or was it just for a consultation?

I say 20 minutes as unfortunatly that was what Prof S told me it would be, i assume had i been going over and having the treatment it may well be a full hour etc. Im sure i can make the most of those minutes and i know his time is precious!!

Im so excited , that sounds crazy really but i cant wait to talk to someone that actually knows more about this than me! Doctors and Podiatrists included. Hopefully i wont get the feeling of being ignored and made to feel as if this condition doesnt exist as the others no nothing about it. Not that its thier fault i understand its rare!!

Actually does anyone how just how rare or unrare this is? Are there any figures? I couldnt find much in my hunting

Thanks :)

Re: Prof S here i come!

I was last there in November. I have had both hands treated. One two years ago, the other last year. The jury is still out IMHO on the one treated two years ago. No physical reduction in existing condition, a reduction in active symptoms except for some ongoing slow changes. I count no contracture as a success though.

Two years ago when I had the first hand treated, ProfS diagnosed the condition in the other hand (the one I had treated last year) but declined to treat it then. My point is that he won't always treat, examples are if he thinks the timing is not right usually because there are few active symptoms or his diagnosis is that the stage is too early.

It is so wonderful to share experiences here and learn of others treatment/success. I am very excited also as am planning to see Prof S in early March. I am planning the week because traveling from Alaska, I am hopeful to get treatment if possible. I would love to hear about any Hamburg info that you would feel would be valuable. I have never travelled overseas before and am very excited to make the most of it. What are/were your experiences with public transport is a big question of mine. Any info greatly appreciated!

If you look under the patients tab you can find people who have generously contributed their travel experience.

Hamburg is a city rich in culture, shopping, architecture, history. Your first decision is whether to stay close to the clinic which is near the airport but in the suburbs, or central Hamburg.

My own recommendation would be to stay in central Hamburg. Which part of the centre is another choice. Public transport, by underground train, or suburban train, or intercity train is easy and cheap. A special train runs from the airport to the centre of Hamburg, every 10 or 30 minutes, with the station in airport. You can walk to the clinic from the airport in 25 minutes. Or the clinic is 35 minutes by train from Central Hamburg, with a further 10 minute walk or 2 minute taxi. You can set your watch by the train timetable most of the time and they too run every 10 or 20 minutes. You can buy a travel card for one week, that gives unlimited use of the underground or regional trains, or buses, for about $30.

My own daily routine was get up at 6:45, shower and breakfast done by 7:30, train/walk to clinic and arrive usually about 08:15, treatment within 20 minutes, and so back in Hamburg by 09:30 with the rest of the day free to do tourist things. The first day of consultation would be different because two trips are needed, one for the consult and one for the treatment so I would stay in the suburbs and explore the villages.

Not everyone likes the early start and a few people on here chose to stay by the airport which is close to the clinic, and do day trip visits to central Hamburg. I preferred to be able to stroll out of my hotel at any time in day or eve to enjoy the Hamburg pavement cafe ambiance and sights. YMMV

You don't need to learn any German, as English is widely spoken, but may I suggest you do learn some.

Tamarakruse:
public transport is a big question of mine.

It's a great system, and it goes to the airport, too.

Here's a map of the S-bahn (commuter train) and U-bahn (subway):

Hamburg's system is similar to those in other German cities. Before boarding you buy a ticket from a machine

You can buy different kinds of tickets, just one ride, or one day, or whatever.

Re: Prof S here i come!

This is a great help. Thank you so much both of you. I had looked at the site's personal experiences and this info along with that does help. Especially the subway map, amd the Fodor site is great for sights. My only other question would be if you remember what stop you used to get off at the clinic from downtown, as I would be staying further and cheaper away. Also, did you use a map program, as I am imagining I will not be able to use my phone.

Thanks so much, Tamara.

Re: Prof S here i come!

The stop at Langenhorn Nord is 10 minutes walk to/from the clinic. The stop at Langenhorn Markt is about 20 minutes walk. Both on the U1 line.

I don't understand the question about a map program? Google maps works fine there, I use O2, but data roaming can be VERY expensive so be careful? O2 have a daily cap, then they block you until you reauthorise use. That way you can control cost. Using a map though soon eats up the data and is not worth it IMHO. Paper maps for central downtown Hamburg are available for free. Just do some planning from the hotel (hopefully free) wifi first.

Edit to add, Langenhorn Markt is the centre of a small town or village and is well served by Taxis, Buses, and as the name suggests a local market. Langenhorn Nord is in the middle of a residential area, and I don't recall ever seeing a taxi waiting there, so if you are an LD patient and walking presents a challenge then the Nord stop might not be for you.

Re: Prof S here i come!

Hi all

Great info here as always, i too have looked at the transport and found Langenhorn nord to be closest stop. However the cheap transport card states you can use buses trains and subway. There is (so i read) a stop very close on the bus. I think bus 292? I need to confirm this but Spanishbudda may know.

Thanks and good luck Tamara
