Re: Recent Surgery
My little finger was at 90 degrees when I had surgery. I think you will be happy about the surgery in a month or two. After 7 1/2 years a person can't tell that I ever had Dupuytren's. Finger is as good as before. Nine months after surgery my finger was completely healed, and has been good since. I was thinking that I might try NA if needed on the other hand. But, the longer this hand stays totally fine I am leaning toward surgery again if necessary.

Re: Recent Surgery
Based on my experience (2 surgeries) your recovery at this point is normal. The swelling takes months to completely go away. Keep doing the PT, it's critically important in regaining ROM.

Re: Recent Surgery
@jimh Thanks for the information. I was thinking I would be recovered by around 12 weeks. I guess because the therapist told me we would be done after 12 weeks. I don't know how much experience she has working with this type of problem, maybe she's used to working with other types of injuries.
I will be seeing my hand doctor on Wednesday and will ask him how he thinks I'm doing. The therapist said she didn't think she could do any more for me, it will be interesting what the doctor has to say.
I don't think I ever got the full benefit of therapy even though I went twice a week for nine weeks. The therapist always had multiple other patients to work with and she would alternate between all the patients. Out of the three hours I was there, I may of got about one hour of her time.
I'll continue the finger exercises, heat treatments, vibration treatments, hand wrapping, and silicone sheets at night with my splint at home. Hopefully this will give me more finger movement over time.
Thanks again for the information.

Re: Recent Surgery
dafuser, I only went to the therapist once to get the custom hand splint. My surgeon said that all of the exercises could be done on my own time just as well. I believe he was correct if a person sticks with it. Most valuable was the scar massaging (with the lotion) and flexing the hand all during the day.

Re: Recent Surgery
@callie I know I can do as much physical therapy at home as I was getting at the therapist and save $80.00 per week for the two visits.
I ordered the mini vibrator to massage the scars and fingers today, so hopefully that will help if it's not too late.
Still looking forward to seeing the doctor Wednesday to see what he has to say.

Re: Recent Surgery
On a recent meeting of hand surgeons in Germany one of them said that PT is best done by the patient himself because therapists tend to work the hand too much and the patient knows better what hurts and what helps. But it requires discipline to regularly exercise for months. You might ask your doctor to show you what you can do yourself and then keep doing it. Cheap and probably the best way.

Re: Recent Surgery
@wach The therapist gave me a sheet of instructions for six exercises which I can do a home. I find I get the best results when I do the exercises after I have had my hand in a heating pad for at least 30 minutes.
I'm ok with just doing the exercises at home, abd I may be able t do a few wile I'm at work. I'll get working on the fingers and hope to get more normal movement out of them and to be able to make a fist in the future.
It appears from all the comments I was expecting a much quicker recovery then is possible, so I'll just keep working on the fingers.

Re: Recent Surgery
wach, Thank you for confirming what I have found. My surgeon basically said what you have suggested. For me it was better to do the exercises on my own all during the day. I never felt that I had to work the fingers in a painful way. Working the fingers too hard created some swelling, I thought. I always pushed to what I felt necessary. The constant stretching and trying to make a fist worked great and could casually be done most of the day. It wasn't exactly prescribed that way by the exercises, but worked well.
defuser, I'll be interested in what the surgeon tells you. Please report back.

Re: Recent Surgery
@callie I see the surgeon tomorrow at 11:00 AM. I'll pass on what he says about my hand condition and any recommendations for further physical therapy.

Re: Recent Surgery
I saw the hand surgeon today and he was disappointed in my progress so far. He X-Rayed my hand and said everything looked normal except for some Art in the joints nearest my finger tips on all my fingers.
We did some finger exercises and stretches and he said continuing the various exercises was the key to recovery. He said he wanted to make sure I had as full of a recovery as possible. After about 15 minutes of finger exercises he said I was now able to move my fingers much better when when I first arrived in his office.
He asked if I thought I was getting much out of the therapy and I said not really, since the therapy was not a one on one session, but shared with up to five other people. I told the surgeon I thought I could do as well at home myself.
The doctor did not seem completely happy with the idea of my abandoning supervised therapy. He said he would talk to the therapist and get back to me in a couple of days with a plan. He said to exercise the fingers as much as possible everyday at home and at the office.
The forum advice about not giving up on the rehab and to continue the rehab vigorously everyday was echoed by the doctor today.
When the surgeon calls me after talking to the therapist, I'll pass along what they suggest.
I appreciate all the advice from the forum and will continue the rehab everyday and hopefully see some positive results.
