Re: Recent Surgery

Mikef

Hi all,

Had surgery on my right hand 11/10/11 about 2 months out fingers still tight to bend. Swelling particularly on ring finger. Have a golf trip in about 6 weeks hoping I'll be ready. Be interested in hearing from those fully recovered about time line for making fist and swelling easing.

By the way I had my left hand treated with xiaflex Xmas week and have full use of he hand already. Just a little tender in the palm but no bother. It seems amazing to me that what took 3 1/2 hours for the right hand took 5 minutes on the left. My right was to far gone or the xiaflex according to doctor.

Re: Recent Surgery

The comparison of the two procedures is significant. The surgery was considerably more difficult procedure.

When I was at your stage the most significant therapy that I used was with the elastic self adhesive wrap. Firstly you should be keeping the hand moist with lotion 24/7 to keep the skin pliable. Then take about a 10" piece of 1 1/2" wrap and wrap it around the fist like a rubber band. Leave it on for about 10 minutes. Take it off and then flex hand open and shut for a few minutes. Do this about four times a day. Each day you do this try to make it just a little tighter.

Do you have a night time splint? What have you been doing for therapy? My hand, after 10 years is as good as before Dupuytren's with zero degrees contracture.

I have 2 sessions of PT each week but it ends next week. I wear a splint to bed at night usually can't keep it on for more than 2 hours. When did you notice a decrease in swelling? I can almost touch my palm with baby finger but it is still that tight feeling.

Re: Recent Surgery

The tight feeling will slowly go away. It is different for each person. Are you keeping the skin moist 24/7? I only went to "hand therapy" twice. The important thing is what you do on your own during each day. Just flexing the hand as much as possible all during the day is important.

Re: Recent Surgery

Hi Mike F
I'm also a keen golfer and had surgery on my right hand three years ago at age 43. The surgery was just before the golf pennants season started so I was disappointed that I thought the season was over.
My cut included 45 stitches from above the middle pip joint to more than half way down the palm. I was quite amazed at the recovery though. I was putting before the stitches were out, chipping in 3 weeks and swinging the club fully in 4 (mind you, still in quite a bit of discomfort but I made the team). I used a gel padded bike riding glove to help relieve the pressure of contact. My good wife also vigorously rubbed lotion into the scar tissue for quite a few weeks which i believe minimized the thickening of tissue and improved flexibility.
I strongly believe that the body will attempt to heal itself to a 'standard' that it expects will cope with its current use requirements, and therefore the harder you push your rehabilitation (within obvious limits) the faster and more complete your recovery should be. I also used a splint every night for three months despite my other improvements. Try padding any pressure points with cotton wool or foam, as long as the extension of the fingers is maintained.

Good luck with the fingers.......and the golf!!!!
