Re: Trigger finger

frakon:
Hi, I'm female age 64 and recently diagnosed as DC. It started 5 months ago with trigger finger in the middle finger and there was a nodule where the finger met the palm but I dont think it was what I've read describing the bumps that go with DC. At any rate I saw a Naturpathic physcian after one month of dealing with it and it was getting more painful. No help and he thought I might have to have cortisone injections which I was dead set against. I waited another two months because I had to go through a bunch of rigamarole to start with a new Dr. and she said it was trigger finger and had xrays done which showed mild arthritis. She also sent blood to Mayo to check for Rhuematoid arthritis which came back negative. Meantime the pain is getting worse and the ring finger starts with doing the trigger thing and the middle finger can no longer be bent to the palm. I can straigten it up but it's very painful when trying to make a fist plus its very swollen in the 3rd joint. I asked for a referal to a bone specialist which took another month and he felt the palm and said "It's DC and I can fix ya up with a surgery" He did ask me to make a fist before he suggested surgery. I agreed but have since canceled the surgery after reading online explanations of what
it is. I still have trigger finger in the ring finger and I am making sure I flex that finger so it doesnt become like
the middle finger. No pads or nodules with that finger but I have the cords with both fingers. A couple of years ago I also had a frozen shoulder which was treated with physical therapy successfully. From reading this forum each and every person has different circumstances but there's some common threads that run through. It's too bad I didnt know back at the shoulder stage what was going on. I had days when my arms would pain me especially in the forearms and not know what was causing that and it would go away. It was all DC but it hadnt manifested into the problems I'm having now with the hand and I've started with tingling in the left hand and am wondering if thats the beginnings of DC in that hand. I'm very appreciative that this forum is here. I've been reading all the postings a bit at a time and trying to absorb it all. Now that I've had time to think about it I'm really disappointed with what the bone specialist said and did. No information, a cursory explanation but boy he was quick to set me up with a surgery and PT for after. He said just a 5min procedure for the ring finger and 10 min for the middle finger and he's been doing this for 15 years, blah, blah, blah. Right. I live in a rural area and I doubt he's seen 15 people in 15 years that have had DC. He did get the DC right though. So yes, trigger finger can go with DC. Even says so on the Mayo site. This site is better information though and you get to talk with people who are going through the same things you are. Which helps immensley.

Re: Trigger finger

Welcome! You have been doing your homework, and you have it figured out. Glad you didn't go with the invasive surgery.
Your post was very thorough and will help others. My situation is different, but some of what has happened to you may apply to me in the future. Who knows?
Might NA work for you?

Re: Trigger finger

I was diagnosed with Dupuytren's about a week ago. I found out my grandpa has Dupuytren's, too, so it all made sense. Then I started looking at the DD forum and writing my story, and everyone told me it was not Dupuytren's I was experiencing!! I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'm very confused.
Here's my story! Help if you can!

I'm a 21 year old female. I feel like an old woman, though. I'm almost positive something is wrong with my body and I'm going through a few blood tests to look for things like RA. No one seems to believe me when I talk about my aches, though. Anyways, when I wake up in the mornings my fingers are usually a little stiff. It's been like that for years (I always thought everyone felt like that when they woke up, I didn't know it was unusual).
The other morning I woke up and my left hand was reallllly sore, more than usual. It remained stiff throughout the day, which was unusual. The next day it was even more stiff, and by this time I was asking people if they have ever had or seen this problem before, and wondering why my fingers were so stiff.

The next morning, I woke up and my ring finger was STUCK! It was stuck in a relaxed, bent position, finger-to-palm, and literally would not open up (even when I used my other hand to try to pry it open). It scared me to death! It didn't hurt unless I tried to open it. I visited the nurse practitioner at my work, and she told me it was Dupuytren's. At this time we didn't know my Grandpa has DD, she came up with the diagnosis on her own. I scheduled an appointement with an MD for the next day.
The actual doctor looked at my hand, which was a tiny bit looser but still stuck at this time, found the nodules from DD and pointed out to me that I have one in my right hand as well as my left. He gave me some information, told me to massage it and put heat on it, and that it would keep coming back my whole life. he said if it got worse I would have the options of cortisone shots, surgery and such.

What I'm confused about is that my finger actually released itself. It didn't "POP", but it gradually opened up a little more throughout the third day, and by the day after I visited the doctor it was freed up and usable again (but still sore like it was before it locked up). Because it released itself, the DD forum is telling me the contracture was NOT part of DD. However, I'm just not experiencing the Trigger Finger clicks when I extend my fingers or popping releases that other people have descrived. I've always cracked my knuckles, in fact my whole body snaps-crackles-and-pops.

I'm just really confused. Anyone have any ideas?? Sorry I ended up typing so much.

Re: Trigger finger

Sunshine_89; What you are describing does not sound like Dupuytrens to me. I have had DD for more than 40 years and your symptoms do not match my understanding or experience.

Once you have a Dupuytren contraction it stays that way until you get it released through surgery, needle apeneurotomy or xiaflex injections and manipulation. It doesn't come and go by itself and while contractions can develop quickly it is not an overnight process. Quick = weeks or months. No stiffness in the morning or any other time just a progressive contraction sometimes with a twist to the side. In my case no pain although others on this web site do report pain.

I think you need to start looking in other areas for what is wrong with you. If your MD thought it was Dupuytrens yet recommended massage and heat I suggest you see another doctor.

Good luck.

Re: Trigger finger

Yes, I understand it was not Dupuytren's... That's why I left that "Personal Experiences" with DD forum and went to this one! I was wondering if it was more along the lines of Trigger Finger, since my finger did release itself?

I keep being told I don't belong here, I know it wasn't Dupuytren's but I hope you understand I'm just trying to get some more info. I really don't have any money to go to another doctor... at all. Because of my insurance, it cost me over $300 to go to the doctor the first time, and unfortunately I had gone right before that as well! I don't even have enough money to cover both of those visits, and especially not any more.. So I'm using all my resources I possible can to connect with people who *might* possibly relate. I know I might not get anywhere, but it doesn't hurt to ask. All these symptoms and diseases seem to be somewhat related, I'm just hoping someone will see my story and helps me find out what I'm experiencing.

Sorry, and thank you.

Re: Trigger finger

It might be nothing more than a tendon not being able to slide inside the sheath. It happens in shoulders all the time when a shoulder hurts then it pops and the pain is immediately gone and the shoulder works fine. Just a tendon getting "unstuck".
