Pain and swelling from radiation. Anyone else?

Hello all. I'm in Virginia receiving my first round of treatment with Dr. Weiss. She wasn't sure how well RT would work since I only have nodules on my PIP joints (on both sides of my hands) and she hasn't seen a case quite like mine. The 3rd finger of my left hand has huge nodules on the upper and under side of the joint. Tonight, after 4 doses, it is more swollen, tingly and very painful. Has anyone else had this experience? And has anyone had RT for dorsal nodules only (no palmar nodules and no cords)? I'm getting a little worried.

Hi Virginia,

My nodules were a little more angry for the first few weeks after RT....I looked upon it as they were grumpy because of the hiding that they had....I found that they settled down after about six weeks..... I have heard some people say that discomfort after RT is actually a good sign that Rt is working....

Good luck

Hi,

I am slightly different as I had radiation on the Ledderhose in my foot. However I had my first week of treatment finish 2 weeks ago and this week has been one of the most painful that I have had. Fingers crossed it means it is working but at the same time it is very painful. I have not had any swelling though and just as well or I wouldn't get my foot in my trainer.

Good luck and hope it works for you.

Gary

On the 3rd day of treatment I had pain, a little swelling and redness. I had RT on a nodule and cord that extended from the base of my middle finger to about my wrist. Dr. Crimaldi said that it was not unusual to have pain, because the DD did not like being attacked. It was like the DD was fighting back. It went away after a few days. I know it startled me, but it also reassured me that something was going on in my hand.

HI there cschrieber
I had a lot of trouble with my feet after RT, which lasted for several months before it settled down again. Have a look at my patient story on the 'patients' tab at the top of the webpage. It has all settled down now, with hardly any pain and no more swelling, redness or other notable symptoms from RT. The result one year later is that the nodules have not shrunk that much and my feet will never be 'normal', but they are much better than they were before the treatment.
All the best
Di

Sorry for taking so long to answer. Had some problems with logging in then life got in the way.

Thanks so much for the encouraging words. My fingers calmed down in a day or two. They are still swollen and painful but no worse than before radiation. I really hope this therapy works for me. Will keep everyone posted after 2nd round.

Hi there
From memory, there were a few posts in the lederhose forum under the Going to Germany thread as a few of us went there for both LD and DD around the same time. A couple of others had difficulty with additional pain and some swelling after RT if not other issues I've described.
Cheers
Di
