29m aggressive onset post wrist infection

Hello everyone,
29m from Sweden. At start of June I had a Wrist infection that was hard to treat (went into the bone) so I needed surgical drainage and a lot of IV antibiotics.

Only two weeks after the surgical drainage I noticed changes in my right hand Palm. Unfortunately for me a LOT of changes. I have a nodule below index finger, Cord to thumb, Cord below middle finger, nodules/Cord below ring finger. I’ll attach a photo of my hand. I feel like I have an extremely aggressive case and I feel ruined. I see myself completely useless in a few years. My feet are also tingling at rest….

I like to be active With gym and running and my family. I have a 2 year old and new baby coming in October. We recently bought a homestead and now I won’t be able to do the heavy work that I previously Prided myself in being able to.

As to heritage both my maternal and paternal grandfathers had it pretty bad but I haven’t heard of anyone else (yet).

I Will have an ultrasound in two weeks to asses the extent of the changes. Then I Will try to get a video consult With Prof S.

I’m hoping to hold on until some new preventetive Treatments comes along but seems like it’s atleast 10+ years away if ever. Trying to hold on to some kind of hope.

I think I just needed to write some of my thoughts out.

Thanks!

Re: 29m aggressive onset post wrist infection

Hi Ryohirst,

sorry to hear about your trouble with your hand! It is not uncommon that Dupuytren's starts after surgical intervention, especially for people you have inherited a tendency to develop Dupuytren disease. Are you familiar with radiotherapy for early stage Dupuytren disease https://www.dupuytren-online.info/radiation-therapy/ ? It might be an option for you, provided you can get it where you are living.

Hi Ryohirst

Ah sorry to hear this news. Ultrasound can be useful, but an experienced hand physician can tell just as much by examining and palpating the hand, and confirm the diagnosis. Any contracture? Make the zoom appointment with ProfS anyway as maybe RT is your best chance at this early stage to hold it off. Possibly some triamcinolone shots may help calm things down until then? Maybe it will calm down anyway but like you I would not want to wait.

Best wishes SB

Dear Ryohirst, Sorry to hear all this, but in reaching out you are doing the right thing and sharing. I did the same thing when I found out I was going to need surgery. I have found this forum to be very helpful in learning and sharing experiences. I hope everything works out for you, you have a great deal to work through; but as you figure things out, you will find this is a good forum to bounce things off of members which I am sure you are finding out already. My best to you as you move forward. Rick.

Re: 29m aggressive onset post wrist infection

Thank you all for responding, feels good to get it out there. It was a hand surgeon that sent me for an ultra sound. He felt my hand and Said it looks and feels like Dupuytren but that I was ”too Young”. Seems like other Young people get this comment aswell.

I have no contracture yet and hope I can get RT before all my fingers start bending in. I can’t help but to catastrophize about my future with such an aggressive debute. It’s really draining me.

Re: 29m aggressive onset post wrist infection

Yes, unfortunately, there appears to be too many young people who have indicated an early start to Dupuyterns and it does appear to be more aggressive when it starts early. The good thing is that you have identified it early and will take action. The initial shock will set you back but it will subside as you make a plan of action and begin dealing with it. Continue to reach out and research all the avenues that are available. I found that to be comforting as I learned more and I hope that by being better informed I will make better decisions.
