Can Dupuytren's Contracture be prevented or slowed down?

Thanks for the add...
Some back ground information:

Both paternal and maternal grandfather's had Dupuytren's Contracture with both having fingers amputated.

Mother and maternal aunt have a mild case. Paternal uncle has Ledderhose and Peyronie.

My younger sister started developing Garrod pads in her early 20s. She is now mid 40s and has been suffering for years with now also having Dupuytren contracture and Ledderhose disease. She has already had a failed operation to straighten her finger.

I have diabetes and frozen shoulder (among other things I'm not sure are related).

My current concern is my 15 year old daughter. She is starting to show signs of Garrod pads. The big question - is there anything that can be done, if caught early enough, to stop or minimise any future diagnosis (she is likely to receive) like what my sister is going through?

Re: Can Dupuytren's Contracture be prevented or slowed down?

Hi
Well genetics can't be avoided but then my favourite is 'look after your hands'. What does that mean? Be careful, gentle, when handling tools in the kitchen, garden, DIY, sports, etc but still make effective use of them (I still play piano and tennis and love my garden). There is a list of risk factors on the BDS site https://dupuytrens-society.org.uk/information/risk-factors/ and we had a discussion here https://www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_...1564937697.html
Best wishes SB

Re: Can Dupuytren's Contracture be prevented or slowed down?

Hi. I have Dupuytren’s Contracture on both hands. Left hand is the worse hand. I’ve had 3 surgeries (2009,2015&2021) on left hand. While the surgery did help with cords in my palms and pinky finger, my ring finger could not be fixed. It is permanently bent down at 90 degree angle. Then my right hand started showing signs of Dupuyrtens and was growing at an unusually fast rate. Within 1 year my pointer & middle finger were beginning to contract. My hand doctor told me I had an extremely aggressive case. I had surgery on the two fingers in April. They straightened pretty good.
As there is no cure for this disease I was introduced to Radiation therapy on both hands. The radiation treatments should kill the active cells and help slow down the progression of the disease. If you are on Facebook, look for the group called DART - Dupuytren’s and radiation therapy. You will have to request to join the group but should get an answer quickly. It is full of information from other people around the world suffering from Dupuytren’s as well as Lederhosen. Hope this helps.
