alcohol and DC

Hi, I'm a 45old male, and I'm a professional
guitarplayer (concerts and teaching) and
DC "got" me about 15 years ago.
My question to all of you is :What about
alcohol?
I realy do believe that alcohol is a factor of
importance, because all people I know
with dupuytren are people who like a drink.
(They really like a drink,me too).
I wonder if I'm wrong about this little theorie of mine?
So please let me know !!!!

Thanks,ED.

Collagen and Liver!

I was told it is not alcohol but liver problems, which of course may be caused by alcohol.

Collagen and Liver!

Dup is a buildup of collagen in the "bands" of the palms of the hands, turning them into "cords" thus pulling and contracting the fingers. What is the connection between the liver and collagen? Does the liver produce collagen or stimulate its production? Or does a liver malfunction trigger a collagen buildup. Anyone?? JIM

Alcohol

I'm sure that in some cases alcohol plays a part in the spread of the nodules associated with DC, however this would negate the fact that it is an hereditary disease. I personally do not drink excessively and take vitamin E but still developed Dupytrens Contracture and Plantar Fibromatosis at an early age (30). In addition it has continued to spread - I had to have 2 surgeries last year in order to remove the nodules in my feet.
Recently I heard of some work that was being done in Europe, which linked the disease to the DNA in the skin. They discovered by accident that if you remove skin in the affected area and replace it with fresh skin, there was no recurrence of the nodule - this was known as a "firebridge"
skin graft. Does anyonw else have further information on this technique?

Dupuytren

I've got dupuytren desease on both my palms. First syptoms appeared 15 years ago during my military service. Last several month it's really progressing. Has anybody tried needle aponevrotomy instead of regular surgery? They do it in Paris. I contacted that clinic and got a description of this method. Looks really better than surgery especially when you have to repeat treatment. I will really appreciate any information.
About connection bet dc and alcohol... I don't know. The only one thing - due to my Russian nationality of course I drink more than average, especially last months. I believe alcohol can make some negative influence on progress of dc.
http://www.dupuytren.org/html/gbsommaire.html This is a link to that clinic in Paris. If somebody has any questions, just send me an e-mail.
Thanks in advance.

Alcohol and liver and protein

I do not know if alcohol is involved. I never was a person who was a drinker nor really liked to drink but did drink socially in my 20's and more than several times got high after just a few drinks. Alcohol always had an effect on me that seemed quick, but it is hard to compare to others. I have wondered if it was inherited weak liver or maybe caused by getting sick drunk just two times in my 20's that changed something in my liver.

The protein issue is something I have wondered about because the liver makes protein from food intake and also converts proteins that we eat into amino acids then back to other proteins the body needs. It also converts proteins into other things. It is very complex and not well understood. Science says our bodies continuously have 3,500 enzyme processes going on at the same time.
The reason I mention protein is that the DC deposits are some form of abnormal protein (fibroblasts as they call them).
Anyine have any comments on protein or the liver.

~dq~alcohol and DC~dq~

Hello, I am a 38 year old female with DC in both hands. I have had surgery twice and it's all coming back again. They tell me mine is strange because I got DC at 33 and it is fully invoved with all my fingers and across the palms. As far as I can tell about the alcohol and DC, alcoholics do seem to get it, but I don't think it's alcohol but the suger it breaks down to. Everything we eat breaks down into sugar or glucose. So when you drink, all that alochol it's all turning into sugar and high sugar is what I think is giving some of us DC. I have Diabetes (type 1) but the doctors tell me it's caused by a job I was doing. I think it's a combination of both. If anyone is interested on sharing their thoughts with me please feel free. Thank you

alcohol and DC: which comes first?

Hi, Everyone seems to look on the consumption of alcohol as a prerequisite for getting DC. I first had DC symptons about 15 years ago. My alcohol consumption was then a few pints of beer a week, perhaps a glass or two of 'social' wine drinking. My first surgery on my left hand was 8 years ago, then on my right hand 5 years ago. These were essentially on my little fingers. In October 2003 I had second surgery to my right hand as the ring finger had started to curl as well. Now in February this year my left hand was operated on to address contracture in little amd ring fingers and large nodules on the palm. My condition is progressive and now a chord across the palm is strongly present and growing to my middle finger on my left hand and it has started to curl. I anticipate further surgery in about twelve months time.
Coincidental to these last two operations I was given a 60'th birthday present of a subscription to Wineshare. So I have a row of vines in France and have been down to pick the grapes and enjoy tasting, etc. But my consumption of wine has increased substantially. It started to increase about three to four years ago, and in retrospect I feel that taking up drinking was partly to help compensate for the anxiety and stress caused by my galloping DC. So for me, a higher alcohol consumption has followed my CD development. Perhaps there are others who have experienced this?
I have no family history of DC, nor of alcoholism.
Best to everyone,
Bob
