confused!!

I am a 36 yr old male and got my first nodule about 18 mths ago. In the last few months i have got nodules on the other 3 fingers, (not thumb) of my right hand, and a "pipe" on the bottom joint of my middle finger. There is no contracture at all.

I am a badly controlled insulin dependant diabetic (18 yrs) and drink way to much for my own good. I went to my GP this morning and he wants me to have surgery ASAP because of my age and lifestyle. I am a coward by nature and have read enough over the past few days to frighten myself stupid.

Is my age and rapid onset enough of a reason to have surgery? I realise that it will be the surgeons decision and not my GP's, but i can't help being worried.

thanks

Although every case is different, my advice is not to panic. I had nodules before I was 40, but it was 10 years before I needed surgery. Nodules can appear but remain static and harmless for years; I have some now. If you search the web you'll find that some studies have shown linkages between DC and excessive alcohol consumption, and also with diabetes. So, you already know what you should do: control your diabetes and cut way back on the drinking, and maybe the progression of your DC will slow down quite a bit. Sorry if I sound like your mother, but having had 2 surgeries I'd like to see others avoid them if possible.

Thanks, that is what i needed to know. I appreciate your comments and i already decided to do something about both problems after i left the GP's yesterday. So if i get these things under control am i right in thinking that it could slow the progression down?

just diagnosed

John,
You never know for sure about DC. It is different for each person. If you can eliminate things that might stimulate DC, you should. DC may or may not be a problem for you the rest of your life. DC can go dormant for long periods or it may not.
Good luck
