Dupuytren~sq~s link to Viking ancestry

I understand that Dupuytren's disease has been linked somehow to the Vikings. I have a Viking heritage and would like to know if anyone has any information explaining this genetic association.
Thanks

Dupuytrenes Vs. Viking Ancestry

I have been coping with very agressive dupuytrenes for the past 20 years and have had surgery several times - both hands. It just keeps coming back. I have also studied the subject extensively. What I learned was that every time the genetic heritage of a Dupuytrene's sufferer has been traced back, Danish blood always turned up somewhere. If you have Dupuytrenes, it is a good bet that if you go back far enough on both sides of the family, you will eventually end up in Denmark, and that's where the Viking connection comes from. In my case, my mother's father was straight from Denmark, and I have one of the most agressive cases the doctors say they have ever seen.

Viking connection

Both Knud and his brother Peter have this problem. Their father was Knud Knudsen, born in Aarhus, Denmark.
They are interested in finding some medical relief in Australia by the ColagenaseInjection if possible.

Dupuytren~sq~s

Read website at:
www.baylorhealth.com/Proceedings/14_4/14_4_flatt.pdf

It is great information about the Viking connection and very good information about DC.

We can't get collagenase in the US yet.

Viking Links to Dupuytren~sq~s

This certainly fits in my case. I am fair haired and blue eyed, age 54 and my fortunately mild stage DC first appeared about 5 years ago. My mother was 101% Norwegian and my father had English and Swedish roots. However, I seem to be the only afflicted member in my immediate family. My father did not have DC, I strongly suspect the genes have been tranferred down from my mother's side. My closest male family member is my older brother (age 60) and he has no symptoms. My son and two male nephews are too young for the typical onset. Most of my mother's family remained in Norway and she had 3 sisters here in the United States with no male children. So... I know next to nothing about the health history of my more distant male relatives still in Norway.

Family Heritage

My paternal grandmother, of 100% Norwegian heritage, developed the disorder. My father recently had the surgery. I discovered a nodule in the ring finger of my right hand this morning. Investing in piano lessons at this point would probably be a waste of money :)

Viking ancestry........

I find (as I follow the family history!) that I'm pretty much Northern European/Britsh, entirely. The heredity shows, in my looks.

I'm also finding that Dupuytren's is hereditary, from both sides. My maternal grandmother has had surgery, and my father is coming close to surgery time. I also have a niece who had surgery for her (almost congenital) dupuytren's. (Five years ago.)

I can only say that heredity is appropriate, but it's also something that someone with DC needs to watch/worry about.

DC

well i'm just 36 but have DC likely as result
of the trauma from a bike accident 5 years ago
(it started showing up about 4mo after the
trauma). but i have the susceptible heritage,
mainly via ireland. the other parts are german
and french canadien. fortunately it seems stable,
no progressive curling (i can still pretty much
flatten my hand)....

Vikings

The link to Vikings is interesting but doesn't seem to apply in my family, my father, deceased, my 74 year old sister and my 48 year old daughter all have DC. I'm not certain about myself yet.

On my father's side, however, the link is to Melungeons; on the maternal side, I only know the Swiss and English and German links. No Vikings as far as I know. Although there is no much known about Melungeons, it is believed they were Moors or had a northern European link.

English and German links

Louise:

Your English and German genes are enough. Those peskey Vikings got around a lot in their day.
