Foot Nodules

I have recently, for the second time, had a Garrod Pad removed successfully from one of my fingers. The surgery went well and the finger is in the healing process. There is already more movement (bending) and less sensitivity in the finger that was operated on. I am pleased with the surgery.

The only other symptons of Dupuytren's that I have currently are two nodules on the arch of each foot. They appeared suddenly two years ago when I reached that magic age of 40. My hand surgeon told me that the DD arch nodules had been removed successfully by a foot surgeon in his practice and that it is something I could consider if they became unbearable. I am more hesitant to have my feet operated on for the obvious reason that they support the rest of my body. Has anyone had foot surgery to remove arch nodules? If so, what are the pro's and con's? Recovery time? Also, are there alternatives to surgery for these nodules, and if so, please describe.

Thanks--Steve

Foot Nodules

Steve,

I had foot surgery 10 years ago to remove a rather large nodule on the arch of my right foot. It left a rather nasty scar and I had 4 staph infections which left me unable to work for 4 months do to having to have my foot elevated due to the infections. Also my incision got a tear in it as my skin was not very pliable in that area. It did get rid of the nodule but during the surgery the surgeon found several nodules underneath the existing one. I now have one rather large nodule to the left of the scar (on my right foot) one small nodule on the side and one on top of my big toe and one in the ball of my foot. So when I walk it feels like my foot is rolling over something. I am also experiencing some numbness in my foot along with some pain. I am glad I had the first one taken out however, due to all of the complications it will be a long, long time before I ever have foot surgery again. I now have a rather large nodule on my right hand and my "trigger" finger is starting to bend. I also have a nodule which has just recently appeared on my pinkie finger. I have two nodules on my left hand at the base of my thumb. I have Arthritis so therefore several months ago my doctor recommended I take Glucosamine/Choindroitin for my Arthritis. It truly is the wonder drug for Arthritis, however, approximately 90% of all of the above nodules appeared "after" I started taking the supplements. I immediately stopped after doing research and will have to find other means for that. My Advice - for what it is worth is don't have surgery until you absolutely, positively have to because the nodules "will" come back and stay away from glucosamine/choindroitin. I sound like a very negative person but actually I am not and usually full of humor but there is nothing funny about D/C. Have a wonderful day anyway.

Foot Nodules

Thanks for your input, Cheryll. I am more hesitant of foot surgery, for obvious reasons, than I am for the Garrod Pads. If a mishap occured to one of my hands because of surgery I would be able to compensate with the other hand. The arch of the foot is another matter though. A surgical error, or a failure to heal, in that tender spot could be calamitous. Loss of one foot can not be made up by the other foot. Mobility would be compromised greatly. I would be interested to read other accounts of foot surgery by posters on this board.

Foot Nodules

steve if you read most of these posts most people will agree that you should not mess with those lumps unless it is having an effect on your life. unless you are in pain, can't function normally leave them alome. the majority of the time removing them will stimulate growth and they will come back worse than what you had. my pea sized lump that was removed is now golfball sized. remember that dc can not be completely removed. the chances of re-growth are very high and most of us just hope to have a long time between sugurys

Foot Nodules

Thanks for the info., Kenny. I'm hesitant, as I stated previously, to go the surgery route on my feet unless necessary. I've had success removing Garrod Pads but their impact is smaller than a bent hand or the bottom of the feet. My physician told me Dupuytren's has a mind of its own depending on the person. My dad had Garrod Pads most of his life but they disappeared when he reached his sixties. My younger brother and I have the nodules on our feet but nobody else in the family does. It's interesting to read the histories of others on this website and how the disease has affected them.

Foot Nodules

I have the nodules on both feet though the right foot is the worse of the two. The right foot hurts if I walk or run too much. I find some shoes contribute to the pain more then others. I also have numbness of the big toe on the right foot. The doctor seemed not to be surprised about the numb toe. Does anyone else have numb toes?

My left hand was curled to the point of being usless about two years ago. All fingers but the thumb were affected. I had the knuckle pads removed on 4 fingers and a large incision im my palm the was not sutured. I am not sure what the purpose of the large incision was. Anyway the surgery kept me out of circulation for about a month and light duty for another month. I did extensive physical therapy and the hand straightened out close to original. I would caution anyone to be carefull about getting addicted to pain medication following one of these ordeals. Anyway now the little finger and thumb is curling again and my trigger finger has a knuckle pad bigger then ever. I would say the hand work was necessary but if anyone is considering a surgical fix get comfortable with the surgeon. It is clear to me this disease never gets fixed it is just transformed by whatever action you take. My right hand index finger is affected about 50% of a total curl. I don't consider it bad enough to warrant surgery. I think I will wait to do more surgery untill I absolutely can't use the appendage in question.
