How long does the pain last?
I had this surgery performed at Mayo Hospital in Phoenix on January 12, 2000. So far I can make only half a fist and the pain is still with me. I understand there is a window period of 3 months to regain function of the finger. My index finger was 90% down before surgery, it is about 20% now, but all the other fingers are stiff also. I've been going to therapy for the last two months. They told me I scar quite abit and that is hampering my recovery. Has anyone experienced this situation? My hand still swells and makes it hard to exercise. When my hand starts drooping during the day, I put my splint back on. When it straightens out, I take it off and start exercising again. But it is so stiff it's like starting from square one. How long does it take before I can move my hand normaly when I take it out of the splint? I am hoping to find someone who has experienced my problems.
I am so glad I found this website

pain
In answer to "How long does the pain last", don't get disheartened...I had my surgery last Oct 21, and still cannot close the hand. I have been in therapy twice each week since, and I do about 1 hour of exercises per day (total time) on my own. It is stiff to begin with (each exercise), but in a few minutes, I can take my other hand and push all fingers to the palm. However, I can't "pull" them down with the hand muscles in the normal way. My doctor had originally told me the total recovery period was 3-4 months, so I began to be concerned. I surfed the internet and found the Eaton Hand Clinic in South Florida. Their opinion is that some people require up to 12 months to heal. My therapist told me some people only have to go to therapy 2-3 times!!! Hang in there...I totally understand your concern. I still take a pain pill maybe once each week, depending on the activity. With gloves on (sometimes two on the bad hand) I can drive my riding lawn mower and do things like that without too much trouble.

pain
Yes, pain hurts. It hurts before surgery and it hurts after surgery for a long time. Follow the man....take lots of pain pills. It was good for him. It will help you too. No more pain. Pain sucks.
