Severe pain
I was diagnosed with DD about 3 1/2 years ago. I am a 57 yr old white female. There was only 1 lump in my right hand. As time progressed I developed 2 more lumps. I started experiencing numbness and tingling a couple of years ago, but in the last few months it has gotten much worse and in the last few days it has become extremely painful at night, enough that I wake up and walk the floors. Has anyone else experienced pain with DD? The brochure the doctor gave me says it is a painless disease.

Pain
Tonya, DD can cause 'pain', whatever the medical world says. Tingling effect ? Is that in the area of those lumps ? Or in the thumb area ? If it is the latter, you might want to see a doc about CTS ( carpal tunnel ). Good luck.

Sever pain with DD
The pain is not in the thumb, I had the carpel tunnel thing ruled out when I first started having tingling in the ring and middle finger. It started as just feeling like my hand was asleep. Now - it hurts so bad sometimes I just cry. I have been out of bed since 6 AM (awake since 4) because of the pain although it is beginning to subside - it doesn't hurt during the day - I think because of movement. I am new to this forum and have been reading letters. There is some mention of a topical medicine. I have started using Phytopro Relief for hot flashes. It is a topical med administered by hand. I wonder if this is affecting the progression of the DD. I also have an underactive thyroid and I read a letter about that. I just wonder if that has any effect. And plantar Fasitis is a related problem. Dealt with that for 2 years. Interesting. Anyone had any of these issues. Think I will go see Dr. Eaton as soon as I can get an appointment.

pain with DD
Mark, Thanks for your reply. You are right, last night in my worst pain I put my hand under hot water and it helped. What is up with that? My hand gets tingly during the day, but only have really bad pain at night after I go to sleep. Is it the non movement? Lack of circulation. Makes no sense to me. Will let you know what the doctor says. This is all new to me. I have had no problems with the DD for 3 1/2 years - it was almost all cosmetic - until the last couple of months. What was it Rosanne Rosanadana said ' "It's always something!" Tonyia

pain with DD vs CTS
Eddie, Went to my primary dr today. She thinks it is Carpul Tunnel Syndrome rather than advancement of the DD. I hope so. Anyway, I am going to see Dr. Eaton on the 6th. If he agrees I will probably go to a DR closer to home. I am wearing a velcro splint on my right hand for the time being. She said it can't hurt.

Soya lecithin supplements
Dear All,
I believe that soya lecithin granules have helped the nodules around the scar from when I had surgery on my little finger. I am not saying this can heal a contracture as such, but for any developing nodules it does seem to soften them and help any existing scars. I am all for natural remedies where possible. I also take milk thistle supplements, so maybe this helps too. I had never heard of soya lecithin before, so does anyone know of any side effects ? That would be the only thing to stop me using it.
To summarise my current situation, I have a perfect little finger following NA several months ago, no deterioration. I have another finger which deteriorated quite rapidly after surgery, which is a constant worry to me. I would say it has gone back to around 40 degrees bend.
For what it is worth, I have read several posts about how stress (mental, not physical) can affect this condition. I wholeheartedly agree that this can affect how rapidly the disease progresses. Unfortunately, personal circumstances are quite difficult to keep under control, so I don't know what the answer is there...
All the best to everyone. This site is such a comfort.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery
Tonyia,
If you need to have carpal tunnel surgery, make sure it is done by way of a small slit in the wrist. The surgery that slices down the palm of the hand adds trauma to Dupuytren's and is also harder to heal.

Surgery
Tonia, I'm sure Dr. Eaton probably knows more than Judy about what type of surgery to perform.

Sara Soy Lecithin Query
Hello, Sara. If you do a web search (Google?) on Baboon liver lecithin, you will arrive at several references to a longitudinal study on the protective benefits to baboons subjected to high alcohol diets and protected from cirrhosis of the liver by lecithin consumption. As I understand it, alcohol metabolism produces by-products injurious to liver function. Acetaldehyde may be one of the culprits. The disease process involves many aspects, and an important one is the liver's difficulty in producing COLLAGENASE. As a consequence, collagen production is not impeded and fibrosis develops and extends to cirrhosis which means death. The baboons taking lecithin did not develop cirrhosis. (17 year study.) Presumeably, lecithin enhances collagenase production or some related metabolic pathway. This study is important for liver disease, and, by extension may be important to DD sufferers. Tee-totaling people still get DD; maybe, they would have gotten cirrhosis if alcohol users. Summary: Lecithin may help humans, and it MAY help DD suffers if it supports collagenase production. DD is an overproliferation of connective tissue (collagen fibers) in the Palmar Aponeurosis (palm connective tissue between skin and tendons.) Do a search, read the summaries and decide if it is worth the effort. Liquid is better than granules (more concentrated.) Soy concerns are a separate issue (with passionate activists.) I am neutral and not a scientist. I take Lecithin because I "think" it is neutral at worst and if it helps baboons connective tissue, it may help my DD palms. I also massage the Vit E oil into my palms. This whole subject is semi science and largely anecdotal. Form your own opinion. I doubt that anyone can provide definitive, expert, accurate conclusions (yet) on this topic. (Liquid lecithin consumption is a challenge because of taste and consistency. Gel-tabs are easier and 1/12th as concentrated.) Good luck.
