NA surgery

I can't see that anyone has addressed the extremely important question of how much. I realise that each person that has had NA surgery for DC may have varying degrees of the condition, so the more people that respond to this question the better it will be. We could at least ascertain an average cost and possibly find out if certain surgeons are charging more than others. Please describe as specifically as possible the exact degree of your DC before surgery and tell the total cost. Don't tell us how much after your insurance. Many people like myself have no insurance and insurance holders can figure out their own cost after their deductible

cost

One finger, 85 degrees contraction. Surgeon, $1,266. Hospital day use (2 hours), $1,914. Anesthesia, $396. Therapy, $189. Misc. wrappings, lotion about $50.

Total .... $3,815.

Almost five years later, finger is at 0 degrees contraction and cannot tell that I had surgery (very slight scar if looked at very closely). No loss of feeling or mobility.

My surgery was a limited fasciectomy, not NA. Perhaps you were just searching for NA costs. Sorry.

The Long Answer :)

I had a limited fasciectomy at UCLA medical center in April of 2003. A 45 degree pinkie PIP was corrected to nearly 0. However, internal scaring eventually pulled it back to about 15 degrees, as my surgeon suggested it might. I have permanent nerve damage and continue to have painful swollen joints throughout my entire hand. Though only the little finger was contracted, there was diseased tissue throughout my palm. Therefore the entire hand was opened up to remove it. The "McCash" approach was used. The tissue under the palm scar is still painful. The total cost including extensive PT approached $10,000. I have subsequent new growth of Dups tissue on the thumb and middle finger, but no recurrence on the pinkie.

In April of 2005 I had NA performed by Dr. Eaton on the ring PIP of the other hand. The correction was from 30 degrees to what has become about 5 degrees. The cost was $700. As yet there is zero recurrence, though the diseased tissue in the palm continues to increase. Though no current contractions, the need for additional NA is assumed and at the advise of my surgeon should be exhausted before attempting further OS on my particular biology.

I want to make it clear that my physiological reaction to OS is *far* from typical. Unfortunately I would have fallen into the "Serious Complications" group as outlined in the study I sited under "NA vs OS". I have yet to find anyone with as bad a reaction to OS and have an admitted personal vested interest in the successful spread of NA. My surgeon, who is a former president of the ASSH will be attending Eaton's ASSH session.

Cost

My surgery cost about $4,500. It was a fairly extensive procedure. The out of pocket cost was $150.00 and I have a standard HMO plan. The out of pocket PT cost was about $400.00.

My surgery was in a major metor area and I think is a standard fee for this type of operation.

cost

I had NA from Dr. Eaton on 2-11-05. The office visit was $200.00 plus $500.00 per finger. Total cost to my credit card was $1200.00. Both the ring and pinky were slightly less than 30 degrees before the NA procedure and zero degrees 25 minutes later. Since Eaton was not in the Blue Cross network I was later reimbursed $300.00 by BC.

cost of NA

I had NA done by Dr. Denkler July 2006. Cost was $75 for consult and $750 for one finger correction. I paid on my credit card, and his office staff submitted to Blue Cross who will hopefully reimburse part of it. I had 45 degree contracture on my pinkie PIP joint and also Dr. Denkler did extensive release of tendon in that joint.

I also went to an OT that specializes in hands and had 10 therapy sessions, which I thought were very helpful....I could have done exercises suggested by Dr. Denkler by myself, but because of the work he did on my joint, it was very swollen and the therapy has really helped.

My Blue Cross plan is suppose to pay for most of the therapy, and hopefully reimburse some of the NA expense.....but I don't know how much I'll get back from them....they do take their time in paying...

It was so worthwhile going through all this expense and avoid a painful surgery....my had now goes flat and my finger only has maybe 10 degrees (down from 45 degress) left of contracture, which is great for a PIP correction.
