Preventing further progression of DD?

I am 69 years old and have just been diagnosed with DD.
I have one "bump" on the palm below my middle finger and another beginning under the ring finger.
The hand surgeon I went to said that the disease will progress but it is usually slow when it begins at my age?
Has that been your experience?

He also said to contact him only if my fingers contract.

Is there ANYTHING that can be done to delay or prevent further progression of this disease??
Any treatment or exercises to start now? Any Drs. that have been of help at this stage?

I will be very grateful for any help you can offer.
I must admit I am very distressed about the future.

Progression of DD

Hi Sara,

Two notes of reassurance:

1. Your doctor is correct that the older you are at the onset, the less aggressive this condition typically is. Your chances are good that this condition may never become a problem.

2. What most doctors wont tell you about (due to ignorance or misinformation) is that there is a very safe minimally invasive outpatient procedure, Needle Aponeurotomy (N.A.) which has an excellent track record for releasing fingers that start to contract.

I'll e-mail you a copy of a list of M.D.s who presently offer this therapy. (also posted on this forum). If you look at the websites of some of the M.D.s on the list, you'll learn a lot more about Dupuytrens generally, and N.A. specifically.

By the time you need treatment (if you ever do) there will no doubt be many more M.D.s who offer this simple, effective option!!!

There is no known "cure" for this condition. There is no proven method of stalling progression, but plenty of theories and testimonials you'll find discussed on this forum.

I hope you find this information helpful and reassuring.

Best wishes.

Susan

Stretching Suggested

Sarah:

I agree with what SuzieQ & Anon wrote.

Some folks out there seem allergic to stretching in general(& to yoga in particular).

As for me, all of my medical advisors agree that gentle stretching may help slow down the progression of Dupuytren’s.

My advisors include two big guns whose names you will see sprinkled about on this Website: Dr. Keith Denkler (of UCSF) & Dr. Prosper Benhaim (of UCLA). Both of these terrific doctors specifically told me that they believe stretching can help me.

We're all in this together, so keep reading the posts.

Mark
