Dups & mortality

I guess any further thoughts on Dupuytren's and mortality are better posted under the 'life expectancy' topic, but let me say this briefly, because it relates to the Forum:

The conclusions of the Uppsala study that Sean linked us to differs somewhat from the conclusions of the Reyjavik study I discussed in earlier posts. The Iceland study shows a 90% increase in the chance of dying from cancer, if I'm interpreting it correctly, and the Uppsala study shows a 20% increase. The Reykjavik study concludes that the danger is from something linked to the Dups itself, rather than confounding factors like smoking, and therefore there is no known means of controlling it. The Uppsala study guesses that lifestyle choices like diet & smoking account for most of the increased mortality, and so might be controllable. The Uppsala study had a much larger test population size (about 16,000) than the Reykavik study (1267), so I guess it deserves more weight.

Now, I don't know how to entirely reconcile the two studies (maybe Dr. Denkler can help us there), but it is clear that stage 2 Dups patients are at a significantly increased risk of mortality from a variety of causes. However, it may be that there are things we can do to reduce or eliminate it (see the 'curcumin' topic, where poster Nypon has shared some good research), and that's what I think the forum should focus more on.

Don't get me wrong: I think NA is probably a wonderful thing. But as I have said before, I think we have bigger fish to fry.

Best Regards, Michael
