Is surgery an option after RT

I was recently diagnosed with Dupuytren's. I don't have contractures yet, but I have a fair number of bands and knots in both hands that have been getting worse rapidly. I've been considering driving a few hours to get a consult on RT. However, my best friend is a plastic surgeon and he warned that you basically cannot operate on any body parts that have had RT. He said they lose the ability to heal correctly. Has anybody hear of this? If RT is not successful, will it prevent me from having surgery in the future. Thanks for any input!

Re: Is surgery an option after RT

Dupuytren's RT is low dose and not the higher dosage used for cancer and other parts of the body. Second, I don't think there is a lot of data on open hand surgery following RT for Dupuytren's. But the little I've seen on this subject is that any belief there might be a problem is probably anecdotal. I think he means well but is misguided.

Re: Is surgery an option after RT

I had RT a year ago and was told by the Dr. that one of the side effects would be slower healing were I to have surgery. She didn't say it wouldn't be possible, only that it would heal more slowly.

I too had the same kind of gnarly bumps and bits in my hand along with itching. Having had DC in my other hand for 15 years, I knew this new growth was different and more aggressive. I believe the RT was successful in that the itching and progression stopped almost immediately. A year later the bumps are softer and the extent of my DC is less than before I had the RT.

this is probably the most fact based answer you will find on this subject

Radiotherapy did not increase the complication rate after surgery in case of disease progression...

Re: Is surgery an option after RT

Isn't it amazing a doctor who is suppose to practice "healing" would poo-pah a treatment that works and stops the progression of this horrible disease. Most doctors really don't practice healing they practice treating, very SAD! All the BS I heard from doctors prior to finding someone to do my radiation really ticked me off.

Holy Crap, they think surgery is better than radiation, there is just NO LOGIC to that. Where is their proof skin will not heal after radiation?? I can tell you radiation has worked great on both my feet and both my hands.

I am very active and NEVER want to get into the situation where I can't use my hands or walk. Anything I can do now to slow the progression of this disease the better.

Good Luck, make the smart choice for you! Don't believe everything doctors say!!!
