Help with RT - British Columbia Canada
Hi there,
Does anyone here have any advice on how to convince your doctor to refer to a radiation oncologist in British Columbia, Canada? My doctor said she doesn't think she can refer me and said she'll refer me to a surgeon. She warned me that there is a long waiting period for the surgeon.
I am at a loss, because it's difficult to find doctors here in the first place, and I know that I cannot get a consult with a radiation oncologist unless my GP agrees to refer me. I have booked a follow-up appt. with my GP next week to ask her to please reconsider.
Does anyone have any advice on this front?
Also - does anyone know if a podiatrist can refer for this?
Thanks,
Sara PS - edited a couple of times - hoping to hear from anyone who might have suggestions. I am guessing I will give it maybe a month or two of trying to get treatment here, and if that doesn't work, then I'll likely consider going to the US, Germany or the UK for treatment.

Re: Help with RT - British Columbia Canada
Thanks so much SB, I really appreciate it.
I will ask her during my next appt. what the specific reason is - that's very good advice.
She seems to think she needs to refer me to a surgeon. I'd like to see if RT can help my foot, because the surgery sounds like it could potentially aggravate things and it would just come right back again.
Meanwhile, my GP has been excellent with following up with all the tests (x-rays, ultrasound, MRI all done). She's very kind and has been thorough in getting my foot problem diagnosed, so I was surprised when she said, "I don't think I can" when I asked for a referral for RT.
I will try again! I'll bring the list of RO's in BC that have treated this condition, and perhaps that might help. I'll see if I can find a study or two to bring along as well. I don't want to come across as rude or anything like that - she has been great at getting to the bottom of this. She's a new doctor for me, as my previous GP quit her family practice awhile ago. It isn't easy to find a new doctor here, so am very lucky to have her as my GP.
Thanks again,
Sara

Re: Help with RT - British Columbia Canada
spanishbuddha: Hi again
I put the wrong link up for RO's from DART it should have been https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e...ObQW0uRCOv_i1zA
SB PS have updated the post too
Thank you very much! This list is very helpful, and it shows that there are (at least 7 or 8) RO's in BC who treat this condition.
I will see how things go during my in-person appt. this week. I'll bring the list of RO's, and bring some reports etc. as well.
Thanks again,
Sara

Re: Help with RT - British Columbia Canada
Hi again,
It worked!
I wanted to provide an update in case anyone else is having the same issue with accessing RT for plantar fibromatosis/Ledderhose in BC, Canada.
SB's advice above to find out *why* was very useful, because you just never know what the reason may be that a doctor won't refer.
I booked another appointment - this time for an in person appointment.
I went today - with a list of all of the RO's in Canada (from the DART link that SB provided) that have treated either Dupuytren or Ledderhose - it seemed a bit more impressive than just the BC list. In addition to this, I took a few studies (not too many), which I was able to leave with the receptionist.
She is going to refer me to an RO in Vancouver.
Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it very much.
Sara

Re: Help with RT - British Columbia Canada
Hi Sara,
for RT you typically have to visit the clinic on 5 consecutive days for treatment, and after a break of 1-2 months. another 5x. It is therefore quite convenient to have the clinic close by. When I got my first RT, I travelled about 100 miles to see an experienced doctor. He diagnosed my hands, agreed that RT makes sense, but refused to treat me because I lived too far away and referred my to a clinic in my home town.

Dear Wolfgang,
Thank you for this extra bit of info - much appreciated. I'm glad you weren't traveling a hundred miles back and forth every day for a week - that would be a real hassle!
My GP is referring me to the RO on the DART list who is closest to me. It's not too far from me (30 minute drive in traffic) so this will be very helpful.
I am extremely thankful that this site is here, along with the Ledderhose blog, the Canada Dupuytren page, the DART page etc. I wouldn't have known how to get this treated otherwise.
I'll update here and there, as things get done.
Thanks again,
Sara

Re: Help with RT - British Columbia Canada
Just a quick update...
I met with an expert RO today - and I am so pleased to say that I will be able to get RT for my foot. It'll likely start fairly soon (within a couple of weeks), and I came away feeling like I was in very good hands. The RO I met with seems to know quite a bit about Dupuytren and Ledderhose.
Thank for having this forum here and keeping up with it. I was a bit flummoxed at being initially refused a referral that I didn't quite know what to do. In the end, it worked out - I just needed to ask again.
It's because of this forum that I went back to my GP to ask again for a referral. Thank you!
The other big one is the Ledderhose blog (Gary Manley) - gave me hope that this can be treated and it just might work. Having the DART list was extremely helpful as well.
Really appreciate the forum here!
Sara
