Nodules after RT and thereafter
I completed my last round of RT on my left hand at the end of February '25. Fast forward to now, and I have new nodules. It feels like my hand is getting a bit "crowded." Thankfully, I can still flex my hand fully open, but it's uncomfortable and tight. I understand that DD is different for everyone. But I'm wondering if there's a chance my nodules at some point will stop growing?
Sadly, I'm a bit doubtful that RT is going to be successful for me. I noticed my very first nodule in May '24. I'm 66.
Onward.

Re: Nodules after RT and thereafter
Hi Sheryl
Well that doesn't sound promising at all, but... If you ever read any of my old posts, after I had RT on my left hand, I remained unconvinced for 18 months to 2 years that it had worked, as the soreness, tightness, itching, etc continued. But unlike you no new nodules in that time. My left hand now remains good 15 years after treatment. So maybe there is hope yet that in time yours will settle down.
On my right hand, my dominant hand , the outcome after RT was better in a shorter time. The soreness went and it seemed to quiesce. But now more than 12 years later I do have new slow growing nodules and cords; they (have) develop(ed) so slowly in the last few years that I barely noticed except when my hands are sore from doing things like DIY and gardening (dominant hand use). I do have a care protocol that I find helps and am wiling to share privately, but it's just another persons one off experience that has no real generalised benefit and has not stopped the slow onward progression.
Best wishes SB

Re: Nodules after RT and thereafter
SB, thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I'd be interested in how you're caring for your hands.
One day at a time is all I can do. And lots of prayer.
Thanks again!

I’ll be interested as well, if you still want to share🙂 Thanks!

Re: Nodules after RT and thereafter
SpanishBuddha, I am also interested in your care protocol. I am waiting for my second RT and a bit worried. I still have itching and it almost ? appears worse. Unfortunately, the radiologist warned me both hands were advanced to a degree that I might not have great results. That’s a warning to others! If you’re not sure what to do, seek a treatment consultation with an expert earlier rather than later. Be persistent. I waited because the hand surgeon I originally saw shrugged me off and told me to come back when it was bent enough to have surgery. As I didn’t get any information about other treatments and it eventually, after 3 or 4 years, progressed very very quickly, iit got to an advanced state. I didn’t know the cords and nodules, hidden to some degree under the skin, were so prolific and had infiltrated the palms.

I guess this is what you get when you see a doctor/surgeon: I had the same answer you got 15 years ago: come back when you can pass a pen under your finger... Who knew then?! So I had a NA on June 9th on the right hand and now I'm having my first RT cycle that ends tomorrow, no itching yet and I'm already using hand cream . Did you feel very tired? I'm exhausted and lost some weight too, 1kg. Now I have a nodule on the little finger on the left hand 🙄 but I cannot feel any chord from the palm to the finger Could be possible?
Are you having RT to both hands ? Good luck to you!

Re: Nodules after RT and thereafter
We must have all seem the same hand surgeon all those years ago! I was told the same thing, including about the pencil! That nodule was in my finger and never progressed, and the new nodule is far away, so maybe RT wouldn’t have changed anything anyway. I wish I had gone right away for the new nodule on my right hand, but I couldn’t find anyone near me doing RT, and it was at the height of COVID, anyway. I just finished my first course to my hand in July. If there is any change, it isn’t much. I just started radiation on my left foot this past Monday. No side effects so far.
I’m not optimistic. I feel like it’s too late for both. The only reason I have less than 10 degrees contracture in my finger is because I’m hyperflexible. If you compare the flexibility of my right vs left ring finger, there’s way more than 10 degrees’ difference.

Are the new nodules and cords in the same place that was radiated?

The pencil story has been told worldwide… in France a friend of mine went to see a surgeon and was told the same!
I finished my 1st cycle in July as well. Waiting for the second one too. My husband measured the nodule on my ring finger, before and after: well it’s 5 millimetres smaller. Very difficult to measure the others on the palm. Before surgery and radiation there was one nodule on the palm that was bothering me, not anymore. I also discovered that the surgeon didn’t cut my palm cord, sigh. I hope the next R. cycle will help. That cord doesn’t allow the finger to align perfectly with the others, but it is straight. Still wearing the splint glove at night, and sometimes after applying Rub-a535 Triethanolamine Salicylate 20% topical cream - over the counter-and then hand lotion that helps with the absorption. I noticed that works a little , at least for me. Didn’t have any hitching problems so far. It’s not an exact science what I’m trying but so far so good 😊 . Wish you all the best!

In my case the new nodules and slow growing cord is indeed in the same area that was previously irradiated. The treatment was more than 10 years ago, and since the hypothesis of the mechanism of RT treatment is not prophylactic, I don't find this surprising given the elapsed time.
