Collegenase/Xiaflex in Australia & a comment on NA

Hi All:

I had surgery done to correct Dupy's on my right hand a few years ago, at what I presume was the young-ish age for this condition of 50. I can't say it was completely successful: the pinky is bent again, but at least it seems stable, and I can wear gloves (which is my test of usability). No doubt I left it way too late-- my fingers were very bent, and nearly touching my palm.

Now the lefthand pinky has a nodule and clearly in a few years it too will need treatment. I know that Xiaflex trials were done in Brisbane here in Aus, but have had difficulty tracking down the results.

Does anyone have any info for Aussies on (a) approval and (b) possible availability? The info on Xiaflex seems very mixed, but it seems to me worth a go if only to avoid the hassles of surgery. As a single person with no readily available help, lumbering around the house in a cast yet again is not an attractive possibility.

And on NA. I visited Dr Green, an NA practitioner, at St George Private before my first surgery and she was not all keen on the technique.

Thanks for your time
Garry

Garry did you have any luck with xiaflex in Aust ?? I would like to know if anyone is treating with this ?? I have had NA before in Paris and Vic Aust ... would like to know if I have any otherr options other than back to Vic which was ok but comes back every 12 - 18 months ?? and in Vic you go through full theatre surgery for NA ?? which adds to the cost ?? cheers Dave

Hi there:

Sorry for the tardy response. I must not have turned on the response alert system.

I have had no luck looking for Xiaflex in Australia, although as we all know some major trials were conducted here.

When I approached my own surgeon about it in Feb 2011 concerning my left-hand succumbing, he was blissfully ignorant.

Hi Garry Australia Calling. I have spoken to a couple of chemists and an Urologist and I believe that Xiaflex is not availiable in OZ . You might try contacting Pfizzer. I believe it has not as yet been released for general use in Europe.

Re: Collegenase/Xiaflex in Australia & a comment on NA

Hi, I was involved as a participant in the double blind trial of Xiaflex in Australia a couple of years ago. The injections worked reasonably well on my very severe and mulitple Dupy's. If the treatment were available at an affordable price in Australia now I would definitely want to undergo it. There were a couple of issues that needed to be ironed out before the treatment would be acceptable in my view: 1. the injections and subsequent cord breaking needed to be carried out in tandem with pain management such as local aneasthetic and perhaps nitrous oxide :-) in order to make the process bearable as the pain was quite extreme, especially during the cord breaking attempts. So if anyone has any up to date info about the availability of this treatemtn in Australia I would be very keen to know (eagleye67@msn.com) and I would be keen to talk to others who have also undergone the treatment. Cheers.

Oh, and the second issue was that the practitioner delivering the treatment needs the aid of ultrasound or other tool to aid in the accurate delivery of the drug as on one occasion I was mistakenly injected directly into my middle finger tendon and have lost the use of my last joint as a consequence - not good.

And I should probably also add that I too underwent the surgical treatment about 15 years ago and have not been inclined to revisit it given the moderate result at the time, the scarring and the ultimate return of the dupy.

Re: Collegenase/Xiaflex in Australia & a comment on NA

I had an appointment in late 2010 with an Orthopedic Surgeon who was involved in the trials in the Brisbane area.
He advised that the issue was with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Authority with - hopefully - a result by mid 2011.

Re: Collegenase/Xiaflex in Australia & a comment on NA

Does anyone know who the surgeons who did the trial in Brisbane were? Any news on when the treatment will be available? I know several people with the syndrome who would be very interested.
