Re: Radiation Therapy in US (Texas) Cost? X days X treatments?

flojo, newman, TrevB, Diane,

I have been away from the computer for a couple of days....thanks for all the posts, please keep them coming. Give me a little time to look into all the suggestions.

To answer a few questions posed....I'm 38, doing the table top test (palm up) - I can touch all fingernails to the table. Basically the pit in my hand is getting worse and it hurts (much worse when I stretch / flex my hand all the way open).

Diane,

Are you from the US and if so, how did you go about setting things up in Germany? I have sent some e-mails so far but no response... Any help on contacts or how you went about it would be appreciated.

To all

I believe RT is a good option for me, but that is my opinion. I would be willing to travel to get the best care, but my big question now is RT or NA correct for my current stage. Has anyone had experience with long distance evalutaions......before travel?

Thanks
Alan

Re: Radiation Therapy in US (Texas) Cost? X days X treatments?

I live in California. I was seen by Doctor Oliver Ott in Erlangen. We exchanged Email, after I contacted him by telephone. The Email address and telephone number for Doctor Ott on this site are the same as I used to contact him. It took Doctor Ott a week or so to contact me initially because he was busy moving and no one clears his voice mail or Email when he is away. Doctor Ott sheduled the appointment for me. I had only one small problem, convincing the staff in the business office that I had an appointment and needed to pay for my treatment. Plus, they do not accept credit cards and I had to find an ATM to obtain cash.

From what I have read on this site, most people who have treatment in Germany go to Essen. I chose Erlangen over Essen because I had previously visted the Erlangen / Nurenberg area, know my way around, and my daughter-in-law attended University there.

I had a slight contracture in my right hand prior to the RT and it has not increased. I have not had NA, but may at some point in the future.

If you decide to go to Erlangen, the Altman Stubbe Hotel is walking distance to the clinic, clean, the owners and staff are very nicel, and the rate includes breakfast and parking. Plus, it is surrounded by many great restaurants, interesting sites, and shopping.

I could swear I saw a post where someone said they had RT in San Francisco but now I can't find it. Am I dreaming or is there someone there doing it?

Thanks

Hi Moondanc,

I think I read where someone mentioned itching as a symptom of Dups. My palm itches every day or so and it definitely seems to be telling me that it's active. I haven't seen itching mentioned much as a symptom.

You may have picked up the RT doctor in SF from a post that I put up a couple of months ago. Dr. Denkler who did my NA made a contact for me at UCSF for RT after I asked him about RT. I did not make any contact with the doctor he referred me to. I don't know if he has treated Dups before or not. Since I live in So Cal, Scripps is closer for me so that's where I went for my first consultation.

Here is the email exchange, my email to Dr. Denkler and his reply. I hope this will help you out.

Hope this helps.

What is your opinion about radiation therapy for early stage dupuytren's? From what I have been able to find out, it may be an option for me. How does one determine which one would be the best option?

Diane,

Thanks so much for the contact and arrangement details for Erlangen. It seems another person "Diana" has a post about Essen as well now that is clearing up some questions.

Re: Radiation Therapy in US (Texas) Cost? NA

You also asked about NA

Just last week I visited Dr. Grabow at his Dupuytren's Clinic of Nevada in Henderson. He performed NA on both hands. I am quite pleased with the results and should improve even more in the next several months.

He has instructions on his web site for taking pictures of your hands, which you then e-mail to him. He telephoned me on a Sunday for about 1/2 hour from his home to discuss my case, no charge. The next day I called his office to schedule the procedure. [Umm, a local surgeon charged $185 to say he couldn't do it and refer me to another, total time 10 min.]

Newman--

Do you happen to still have the info on the hotel you stayed at in Essen that was near the hospital? I'm currently looking at places to stay.

Thanks,
Alan

Alan, you might also contact Christiane Giebels. She has a list of reasonable hotels close to the clinic. BTW, when booking a room referring to the Krupp Hospital sometimes yields a discount.

It will be two years in June 2009, since I received RT in Erlangen Germany. The total cost was 500 Euros for a series of two (2) treatments for both hands and feet. The size of the nodules and the pain in my feet reduced by 95%. Of two nodules in my right hand, one reduced and the other has grown, but remains soft. The nodule on my left index finger reduced in size, no longer swells, and is pain free. My treatment in Germany was a positive experience and since I can now walk without pain, successful. In addition to obtaining treatment from more qualified doctors (in my opinion), the cost of a trip to Germany and the treatment is less expensive than having treatment in the USA. I recommend Germany for RT!

Diane...
Your wonderful remarks have made me decide Erlangen is the place for me. Any advice about the trip and such is appreciated. Direct email is jeff_at_thetrigger.tv
