Surgery or wait? Pics inside
So I(42M) recently saw a hand surgeon and he sorta rushed me into scheduling hand surgery. I've had this going on for almost 20 years, I've snapped the cord before a 4-5 years back and it's since regrown. I'm really into BJJ and grips and grabbing in general are very important and even though it's bent very noticeably now (if i try to straighten my hand) it doesn't negatively impact my day to day.
I'm worried that
My hand will be weaker after and won't return to full strength
It will accelerate the speed it grows/re-grows and I'll need another surgery in a few years (as some people on here report) rinse and repeat.
Just looking for some fresh opinions, anyone gone through similar or feels strongly one way or the other and why.

Hi
Your concerns over surgery are genuine, leave it as last resort if possible, but many people also have a good outcome. It's hard to pre-determine what influences the result, but one factor is the skill and experience of the surgeon dealing with DD. Have you checked out his results, references, background. Even with a good result you can expect some down time possibly a couple of months at minimum, but often longer, and your concerns of recurrence sooner or later are valid.
IANAD, but the cord in the palm looks as if it may be amenable to being treated with NA or Xiaflex. Did you ask about that? The nodule and I assume cord in the finger is less likely to be teated by NA, but maybe Xiaflex is possible? I would personally prefer these approaches ahead of surgery if they are possible and the doctor has experience using them. You may get some improvement this way.
To prevent recurrence after surgery some people try RT following the surgery, and report succesful outcomes (how you measure that I can't say, presumably no flare in the short term); but this is anecdotal although I believe there is a trial looking at this to get a better evidence base. It is something to consider if you do have surgery.

I did ask about the injection treatments, and he doesn't do them. I saw another hand surgeon in the area 6 or so years ago (before I snapped it myself playing sports) and he also said he didn't do the injections. Reasons from both doctors was the cost (some insurances don't cover) and in their opinion they felt you get better overall results from surgery.
I guess I need to decide what is a last resort to me and right now I'm not at that point.
