Treatment after surgery

I have had surgery for dupuytren contracture on my little finger and now find it difficult to get my finger to bend. Any advice?

Re: Treatment after surgery

Welcome Bilbow,

If you browse around the forum or use the search facility you will find other peoples experience of recovering after surgery. Most people say it takes a while, 6 months or more to get good flexion back in the hand without pain. Many recommend physical therapy and especially the use of massage with oils to keep the scar soft and supple.

Best wishes

Re: Treatment after surgery

Bilbow,

How long has it been since surgery? Without a doubt, the best thing for me was keeping the wound moist 24/7 with a hand lotion (Aveeno) and using a self-adhesive bandage shaped like a rubber band. Cut about 10"-12" of the bandage to put around your fist. You can use this over and over. Put this around fist for about 10 minutes at a time, then take it off and flex (open) fist several times. I would do this several times during the day. Gradually tighten the bandage as the hand is able to close more fully. During the day flex and close the hand often.

I had surgery on my little finger 10 years ago and you could never tell that I had contracture in that finger. The finger is as good as before Dupuytren's.

Re: Treatment after surgery

Thank you for your response.
It has been 4 weeks now since surgery on my little finger. there is still swelling which I think is the reason I cant bend it without pain. my physos says he will make it touch my palm the next time I go. Not looking forward to that!
