Advice needed re dry callus on finger which previously had fasciectomy

Over three years ago I had fasciectomy surgery for Dupuytren’s on my LEFT hand fourth (pinkie finger) at a private hospital in Spain. That surgery was reasonably successful (but not perfect – I still could not fully straighten my finger) but in the weeks/months following the surgery, while most of the scarring healed quite well, I have been left with a very annoying callus-like patch of dry/scaly skin on the lower inside section of that finger – see attached photos.

AND

I’m not sure whether the problem is just due to damage to the outer layer of skin tissue or if this is what you would call “scar tissue”. The affected area is less than 1 square centimetre, but is hard lump of white scaly skin and is slightly raised like a callus.

Now as this is not at all painful, I’m sure some will say this is no big deal compared with the post op issues some of you have had. However, I find it impossible to avoid rubbing and picking at this dry callous with my thumb of the same hand, or other fingers, and this often leads to me picking off much of the surface tissue leading to a raw sore finger for a few days until it heals. Unfortunately, even after picking away most the dry skin on the surface, when it “heals” it’s back to the same dry bump as before. I have tried applying various hand creams and vitamin E oil, but they have made no difference whatsoever.

Now I know many of you will just say “Well the simple solution is for you to STOP picking and rubbing it!” However, I have found that impossible - and in past year I have found only way to stop me rubbing the dry skin away is to wrap a sticking plaster around it. However, it’s become such a habit that my thumb still gets drawn to the area and I end up wearing a hole in the Elastoplast so I have to change that every couple of days!

This is driving me crazy (!!) so I’d appreciate if anyone can…

a) Advise what exactly the problem is and what it’s referred to as.
b) Whether this can be resolved for good, and whether it would require some form of surgery or application of creams etc.

Thanks
Gareth

Re: Advice needed re dry callus on finger which previously had fasciectomy

Hi Gareth

Are you absolutely sure it’s not a cord beneath the skin, and a callus is forming on the protuberance?

I had a strange lump of hard skin like that too, but on the fingertip. I would file it off, use wart acid to remove it, tried freezing like warts and softening it with scar silicone tape, etc , but it always grew back. You could try these things too but maybe show a GP. Mine eventually went after I had RT on that hand, although it was outside of the irradiated area, so I figure mine was like an external fibrosis or nodule.

Best wishes SB

Thanks for your advice. I'm really not sure what it is. I guess I should ask my GP although I'm unsure if even he will know for sure what it is! I'd feel more confident getting an assessment of it by a skin specialist or hand surgeon, so I might wait until I get my other hand operated on (as per my other thread https://www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_...176780_1.html#1 )
