Do dupytrens lumps get bigger??

Hi

I've recently been diagnosed with suspected Dupytrens but the consultant seemed puzzled by the fact that the lump had grown. In fact it has continued to increase in size, now pulling on the tendon in my hand. So my question is really - is it normal for the lump to get bigger? Also, there is so much written about this being a 'painless' condition but my hand really aches! Again - is this normal?

I would be grateful for any and all replies!

Thanks

Everyone is different. Proabably most cases are slow developing and mostly painless.

In my case, my nodules got bigger and are tender/ache/sting. There are plenty of folks on this board who report tenderness, stinging/burning/aching with their nodules. I believe in most instances the more aggressive cases have more nodules and more issues from nodules.

Yes agree with tusk. Before I had radiation mine were growing bigger and developing into cords. They also ached and my hand was sore to squeeze or exert on a door handle and so on.

"the consultant seemed puzzled by the fact that the lump had grown"
The answer is :Yes

It is puzzling to me that there is not much knowledge about this disease. So many people have it. My nodules were painless until recently, my strenght in my hands seems to go and there is some pain now. In my case they multiply like crazy. I had RT done in September and since then, my right nodule got softer. I can put my hand flat on the table again. The others are still growing but I hope my second round of RT will take care of them.

Re: Do dupytrens lumps get bigger??

I found out last March (even though I noticed the nodules in December) that I had DD and LD. Mine progressed very rapidly and by September I had 4 nodules in my left hand with cords and one on my index finger. On my right hand had three on my palm with two on index and middle fingers. Mine caused tingling, burning and pain. The pain at times would wake me up from a dead sleep (right hand) and on my left foot painful when pressure applied (walking or standing). Started RT at Vanderbuilt Ingram Cancer Center with Dr. Cmelak on October 12th and go back for second round in December. I have cords from both thumbs and the only changes that I have noticed from the first round of RT is one of the cords and nodules on left hand have become a little softer. Will see what happens after the second round.
I wish you all the best and prayers coming your way.

Re: Do dupytrens lumps get bigger??

Thank you all so much for your responses - it's so easy for consultants to be dismissive of symptoms that don't fit with what the books say... I'm going for another consultation next week, then hopefully surgery soon after... want to nip this in the bud, my job depends on manual dexterity so can't afford to let this get too far advanced... not looking forward to surgery but neither do I want a contracted finger putting me out of work...

Re: Do dupytrens lumps get bigger??

Have you and your consultant considered alternatives to surgery at this stage?

prosperina,

I think you are premature in thinking about surgery at this stage. Let us know what your next consultation produces. Surgery generally isn't advised until the contraction reaches 30-40 degrees.

Prosperina,
I agree with Callie...don't rush into surgery until you explore all other possibilities. Have you considered RT? Read all you can in this wonderful Forum, come back with more questions and many will answer. There is always time to do surgery in the end.

I had successful RT in November 2009 for multiple nodules on my left hand... and two hard, marble size nodules in the arch of my left foot. After two years, the nodules on the foot are 90 % gone. Some of the nodules in my hand are gone, and the remaining nodules on my hand are definitely softer and smaller. The constant itching and burning I had in my hand and foot has stopped. I consider myself in remission in the areas that were radiated in '09. There are new nodules in my hand, but the new nodules are outside of the radiated areas.

Re: Do dupytrens lumps get bigger??

I agree with Luba. Consider early treatment options especially radiation therapy (RT) and then needle aponeurotomy (NA) if you develop contracture.

I had successful RT and it stopped progression of DD in the irradiated area. I'd say mine is progressing fairly rapidly, but not as aggressively as some have reported on this site. See the thread that I just started "New nodule after 2 1/2 years. Bummer!" for the short history of my Dupuytren's. I am doing all I can to avoid surgery.

Research RT and NA under Treatment at the top of the page. Neither RT nor NA are as drastic as surgery.
